Can this be fixed/restored?
I recently ran across this in some of my dad's things from years ago. His was a Pontiac man, his first new car was a '56 two door hard top. He had spotted this laying in the street around '89 shortly before he passed. He brought it home and hung it on the wall. Can't remember but I think this is where he bought his '56. Is there a shop that could fix the broken off ears and the pits?

Anything can be fixed, for a price.
Unfortunately you’re going to find that it’s not economically feasible to restore that license plate frame. It has character and a nice patina as is, if it was mine I’d be content with it as it sits.

Follow your Dad's example, and hang it on the wall, as is; but with an explanatory note! Jon.

Leave as is and maybe display with other things of your father. He found it in the road which provides even more character. Good conversation piece. Chris.

I thought I had seen at one time someone who restored them. Doing a quick search this was the only service I found:

You could probably brighten the chrome some if you wanted. It wouldnt look perfect, but it would pop a little more. Everyone has their methods. Ive had good luck with rubbing old bumpers with aluminum foil and white vinegar. Knocks off some of the lighter rust.

I think I will polish it up best I can and display with these that were original to the '56.

Use it to frame a picture of your dad and his 56 if you have one of it.If not just use pictures of him.

If it was mine and I wanted it repaired, I would contact Speed and Sport Chrome Plating in Houston. They have done some very fine work for me, and they do pot metal.

Don't restore it, it will look like a reprodution. Leave as he found it. The patina gives it character.

On second look, are those rust stains I see? If steel it is even easier and cheaper to salvage than cast pot metal. You asked if it can be fixed, not should it be fixed. I say do what makes you happy. |

There is a gentleman on Facebook that reproduces license plate frames and dealer stickers. He could most likely replicate that plate frame and then you would have both! Just an option.

You could substitute your own time/effort for some of the restoration cost. The sergeant's stripes on my '59 had deep scratches and pieces broken out. With a bunch of hand sanding and using body filler I restored their exterior shapes, then had them Cosmichromed. The photo doesn't represent them well- they are almost as shiny as chrome, more like polished stainless. After a few years on the truck they still look great.

Thanks Greg. The coolest stuff doesn't show- Tri-Power engine, VOE exhaust (remember this GTO option?) thanks to Tom Hand's SS reproductions, HydroStick by HydroMotive, etc.

Love that wrap around backlight, the color combo, the stance, the twin exhaust, chrome reverse and moons....everything is just right.
