Convertor help
Hey guys,I have a 69 bird with a stock350 as far as it sounds and a 400 trans. Issue is when I put it in gear reverse or forward it bangs hard and trys to kill the motor. Does it sound like it needs a better convertor ? I have no idea what is in it as I bought this way. What stall speed would be recommended for street only so it will idle in gear.
Thanks in advance

A stock 350 engine should get along fine with a stock converter. What is your idle speed? If it is 700 RPM or lower I would be suspicious of the converter going bad.

First thing to do is check the timing. Likely someone installed a distributor spring "kit" at some point and timing is falling off some when the engine is loaded at idle speed (trans placed in gear). The timing mark MUST NOT MOVE in and out of gear or you will experience the exact issues you are seeing here......Cliff
