Visual proof that the 3/8 belt is too small for the PS groove. This is a 68 'short' pulley. The Chevy pulley uses the smaller groove in both positions.

Got another water pump pulley in the mail today. 481040XT... Also too short but only by 1/4". That's three wp pulleys I have now that are too shallow for the application. Well, actually two..the Chevy pulley is the correct depth but narrow groove size and diameter is slightly smaller. Getting a little frustrating. I'm almost ready to run the Chevy pulley with the narrow belt.

What is the casting number on water pump ?

I could make you a spacer if you really get stuck.
Just an aluminum disk whatever thickness you need with four holes for the bolts. |

That sounds like a good solution to me.

No casting number but it's 4.5" from the mounting surface to the fan hub.
Thanks dataway but I don't think a spacer would work. I'm needing the pulley grooves to come back, not forward. I just bought another one. The guy sent me a pic next to a ruler so hopefully it's correct this time. Funny thing is that the one I just bought and the one I got in the mail today are the same stamping numbers but the one I just purchased has a 'D' at the end of the number. Maybe that's where the extra .25" comes in? I guess I'm going into the second hand pulley business for a while. I'll post them in the classifieds. VERY frustrating...and getting expensive.

You sound like me ... I'm a belt stickler ... have to run true, no climbing in the pulleys, no vibration

Hope the pulley you have coming is a "128" or "130". Those are the only original pulleys that will line up right with '68-70 AC diam crank pulleys & a tall 11 bolt waterpump.

As a service parts procedure, Pontiac advised dealerships in replacement of original '69 waterpumps to install the tall '70 (or later) casting wp along with swapping to the '70 design wp pulley. This is easily noted in Master Parts Books. This service procedure worked fine on '69 A, B, & GP series cars, but not on '69 F-body's with 4core radiators.

OPH, any ideas on why the 481040XT that I just bought is 2.5" tall and the 481040XT-D is apparently, judging from a photo sent by the seller, 2.75" tall? The 'D' is the only difference I can see. Maybe F as opposed to A body applications?
The different accesory bracket and pulley combinations that apply to Pontiacs is enough to make your head spin!

Ok, I give up. I'm putting the Chevy pulley back on with the narrow belt. I can see why someone did the swap in the first place now.
The pulley l just got here is closer on the overall height but there is a half inch difference between the face of the pulley and where the first groove is placed... As a famous GTO tag says... GR-RRR! Sent from my moto g(6) play using Tapatalk

If you're going to stick with the narrow, might I suggest a 66 crank pulley?
The crank and water pump were in a perpetual state of war, using the PS pump simply pushed things over the edge. Eliminate the primary conflict. |

After cooling down a bit, I should say that I'm not giving up on it but I am approaching the problem the wrong way.
I need to figure it out and stop buying parts to throw at it. First thing is to figure out what I have for accessory brackets, ps pump etc. Then figure out what it is that I need to make it work. Sent from my moto g(6) play using Tapatalk

Was there a 4" water pump length in 11 bolt as well as the 4.5"? If there was, it would solve my issue. I know I read that somewhere but that means little on the www. Sent from my moto g(6) play using Tapatalk
