Pontiac ohc 230ci for 1973 Oldsmobile Omega
yesterday I picked-up the 1966 Pontiac ohc 230ci - very complete engine!! and my manual 3speed trans will fit as well
This engine will be the future powerplant of my Oldsmobile Omega 1973 Coupe, as the Chevy 250 block was cracked! Does any timing belt cover fit? |

WOW very cool! Looks complete, Does it spin?
Carb doesn't look correct but shoot me the number and I'll let you know for sure. That CLEAR Timing belt is very cool. I have never seen anything like that?? Be careful with it when you get to removal I'd love to see it off the engine. Yes 66-68 timing cover will work. 66 is the only year they used an aluminum cover then they switched to fiberglass. Keep us posted! Cheers.

That clear timing belt is CRAZY. Maybe they "tried" to make something work? Let's hope that there are not a 1/2 dozen bent valves inside?

The seller says when he removed it almost 30 years ago from an Impala it was running. He even remembers that he went for a short drive through the vineyards because of this crazy combination.
Peter has his own US car shop and is still rebuilding engines. He gave me a tour in his storage - their must be a ton of other Pontiac, Olds and Chevy blocks, heads, short and longblocks and a few finished engines. Asked to comeback if any issues with the ohc pop up! |

Thanks for the pictures! I agree that it looks pretty complete, and the clear timing belt is very very odd. I also have never seen one like that. I agree with Jeff that the carb looks incorrect for a 66, based on it does not have the "flashpot" attached to the secondary air horn that every 66 Sprint Q-jet I have ever had in my hands had. It also has the large Vent on the float bowl and the Large Tube above the float bowl that was only used on 73/74 Q-Jets. So I suspect it is a 73 or 74 Chevy Carb.
If you are looking for a Aluminum 66 Belt cover I should have 1 left, I would want actual dollars for that one. I could sent you a 67-68 fiberglass one for the price of shipping

the carb is in dead strange - 702705 would be a 1967 Chevy MT? have to look again on the number at daylight.
anyhow I do have a QJet 7043250 A 3203, 1973 Oldsmobile AT, rebuild für a 350 Rocket - would it make sense to use this one? |

Regardless of the carb, just so you are aware and/or if it matters.
That stud is the factory correct stud for the 1966 OHC Pancake Air Breather Lid.

That carb seems to be a frankenstein of sorts, the main body (and probably the throttle plate) seem to be 66/67 & the air horn & choke plate seem to be 73/74.
The Air horn probably warped (common issue when the front mount bolts are over tightened) and you location limited replacement parts, so they used what was available. interesting.

I think that’s cool, with its hood up at a car show or even a auto parts store it would draw a lot of interest.

Very nice. Looks like it may had A/C at one time. Those 7 bladed (OHC only) flex fans are not easy to come by, you may want to pull it before it gets damaged more.

good to know. anyhow it rested already 30 years on it. waiting for the motor jig to be delivered.

Are you speaking of an engine stand, where the engine hangs from the back, or a cradle that the motor sits in?

Would you not recommend the stand where the engine hangs from the back?

Yes, the engine stand where it hangs for sure. So that you can work on the engine. I have an engine cradle as well, but it's just to store an extra engine in my garage.

so, may I ask for advice what to do?
a complete overhaul of the engine? So I first will dismantle it to see the overall condition. I do have a Chevy 250 crank in good condition. Convert the 230 to a 250? |

And would you recommend complete overhall kits like the ones from Egge or Kanter?

I am not sure that a Chebby crank is a bolt in, though a 292 crank can be made to fit. It would not be hard to find an OHC 250 crank.
Also you would need a head. 250 cubes with that head would put you over 11:1 Might be best to keep it simple.
