Trunk refinish process
I’m not happy with the trunk finish my painter applied. So I asked another pro restorer at MCACN. he told me “Hot Rod Black then a coat of the correct GM Aqua / Black spatter, not the rattle can stuff. The correct spatter was used but the base is light gray and semi gloss. Weak, can’t even see the spatter paint.
What’s your process that gets it closest to factory appearing? I’m making him fix it, he should know better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This was a posting on facebook.
- Jim Pennachio to 1964-1970 Pontiac 2+2 1986 2+2 November 30, 2019 · ... Anyone who wants the trunk of their 66 to be painted the original turquoise, Thornton Muscle Cars in Quakertown PA can make it for you. They already make trunk splatter paint so I sent them a trunk hinge and they were able to come up with a very close match. The finished product looks close enough for me, and I like it a whole lot better then having to settle for the black and aqua, or grey and white, which seem to be the only colors available through Pontiac suppliers. The picture is a little dark but you can pretty much see the results. http://thorntonmusclecars.com/

None of them look correct, not even the GM aqua spatter paint for our big cars since they were not done with a spatter paint from what I have seen. Every original trunk for our big cars look to have a base color (65-66 teal) that was laid down first followed by white/grey spatter. That being said, based on the photo on the facebook page, if you were to do a spatter paint, the Thornton's that the guy special ordered looked decent.

The teal turquoise flattened would be a good ground coat. Either black/aqua or gray/white spatter would work fine and no one would question it. Not sure if a clear is necessary, just another step.

Spatter paint for 1963/64 was not the same as 65/66. Same amount of time and money spent to do almost correct vs. correct

Reviving this for the last time. The car is back at the shop getting the final adjustment, fixes and touchups. Going to take once last look at the color for this.
Paint Codes are: PPG: DX-1757, DuPont: 389-256, Rinshed Mason: 838 It's described as either Dark Blue, Green Gray or Turquoise. That product from Thornton looks very close. '68 Oldsmobile trunk paint code was DX-1758. Not sure what the paint codes mean, but 1 digit apart must mean there's little difference between them. I can have the shop mix it right there if I knew the formula. BTW, that DX-1757 code is also used on A-Body cars, those guys can be very particular about those things so maybe I can find out there.
