Cigarette lighter test?
I want to test my cigarette lighter mechanism before I install it to the dash. Is it as simple as putting 12 volts to the round/pointed terminal on the back of the mechanism and then touching the element with a volt meter or a test light? Don't want to do the job twice. Thanks.

testing
I have a fuse holder up line on the hot wire
so I can change out fuses for radios 5 amp or horns for 20 amp hot to the middle ground the case rust is the killer on them ... heat then they rust ... if it looks ugly inside ,,, buy a QUALITY new one .... there is CASCO and Rochester,,, make sure you get the correct one for your lighter... as they dont fit each other ... check your orange hot wire for over heating issues or damage also .., Scott Yah you can clean em up with glass bead or some juice... but its a lighter aand if used as such you want it to pop out on time if its rusty they are slow and over heat,,,, also the ground is an issue for any electronic you plug in .. the contact area is compromised. |

I just went through this on my '73. The lighter receptacle was severely rusted due to inactivity and the effects of the tobacco and air moisture. The only fix was an NOS Delco unit. It doesn't take much wrong to make them work some of the time, or not at all.
