9in and tub question
Hey Guys i thought i may ask for some input/guidance maybe from someone who experienced what i plan to do for my 64 build.
I may sell my rebuilt 10" 8.2 posi and all parts including the housing and good 3:23 gears. Of course with all new install items for when ready to put together. I will haul to pigeon forge and if i sell i plan to buy a 9"setup.Maybe from quick performance. The main thing i concern myself with is i wish to try mini tub setup and have not yet figured/bought wheels to help me figure width to order of my 9in. So im open to tried and true results as i just want a lil more meat on the rear. Im doing various suspension upgrades to modernize and since i havent decided wheel size or proper tub size im open to learning what others may be able to share. im not building a race car but a nice driver i can play with. Im wanting to learn easiest way i can mini tub myself as i plan to remove a stock inner/outter set from a 64 parts car. So currently the method is on my must learn list. Hope you guys can share a few thoughts or results and hope some make the show this weekend. Oh...my current rear wells are fairly decent...hope i can add to themThanks - DeWayne

DeWayne last night I just put some tires on the 65 to roll it around the shop and pull on the car trailer(storage space getting sold for apartment complex). 275-60-15s on my 65 on the rear that are on 15-8" trans Am Turbo wheels that area about 4.25-4.5 backspace and on the original 8.2. Man they are tight on both sides. Barely a finger to the outer lip and about the same to the inner fender. Frame rail is about right there on the inner side also maybe 1/2" inside the inner fender well. So the frame rail may be some of the limiting factor.

Mmmm...reminds me
Hey SkipFix
You mention something that maybe i should have asked suggestions on. I kno the frame can b somewhat of a thought in trying to tub or add wider tires. i have viewed where the frame can be thinned by using a specific kit or just doing some Smart home engineering to make room but keeping strength in the frame I will be removing the 64 frame which holds a ta400 and m21 4sp so i can use my 66 gto frame. Many times ive concerned myself with space just to add decent wide tires and use 17 or 18in wheels. Really appreciate your info you shared.Thats another reason this is such a great site! So looking forward to everything shared That could help me narrow to a good choice for the work/expense for my build.

Yeah - you'll need to perform some frame surgery. I don't remember if the '66-'67 frames are narrower between the wheels, but I don't think so. (I was frame shopping a few years ago.)

You have me thinking of that very thing of the frame widths.Once I get caught up a little I need to take a moment to compare measurements along each frame (64&66)so as to determine if different. I know theres a difference in width of some rear housings but is that due to body design rather than frame size. Thanks for the input!

Here are some pictures of the rear and the 275-60-15. And even a shot of the 265-50-15s on front!

ABC Performance. They have done all the R and D:
http://www.abcperformance.net/store/...products_id=40 You can keep your rear the stock width and add back spacing. With this kit, 11" wide with 7.5" back space will fit with proper inner fender mods (they make those too). I am using 18" x 11" with 5" back space because my rear end is narrowed too. |
