Default qjet-400 problems

i have a 78 trans am. it has a 79 trans am 400 with 6x heads. i have been driving it a little lately and it was running fine. the other day i was driving it to work and it started pushing or bogging at cruise speeds. i can hear it and feel it. if i am accelerating it feels good. it idles ok it just at cruise speeds. i have looked at the choke linkage and the fuel filter and all seems good. i filled the tank with fresh ethanol free fuel. any ideas or help would be appreciated.oh also it has a rebuilt q-jet and a recurved distributor

thanks bryan

Dont forget to check your Vacuum advance and Look for Vacuum leaks Otherwise, I would disasseble the carb expecting to find a little dirt in the bowl.

The key word in your post is " lately" as in the car has been sitting for How long?

if the car runs at full throttle as it always has then your issue is on the primary side of the Carb due to dirt, or things hanging up or being restricted from the effect of sitting with Ethanol cut fuel in it.

well i took the top off the q-jet. it had some kind of oily looking crap in the bowl. i cleaned that out and then noticed the hanger for the rods was bent. i straightened it out and test drove and it ran great. after letting it sit overnight it still runs like crap until it gets warmed up. it is a divorced choke and it is working. it doesnt want to idle good and bogs if you give too much gas taking off. once its warm it idles good and accelerates fine.
thanks Bryan

How long do you have to Crank it when it's cold for the motor to start?

when its cold if i pump it once or twice it fires right up but will stall. if it only sits an hour or two i just hit the key and it starts.

It sounds like your choke needs adjustment.
When you first hit the gas before cranking the motor the choke should close off all the way, then once the motor starts it should open by 1/8" and no more until Manifold heat then starts to make it open.

Useca 1/8" drill bit to set the choke.

OK this is what happened, the little clip that hold the spring rod to the choke came off after i put the air cleaner back on. when i test drove it then it was warm. after replacing that and a little adjustment it seems good. thanks for the help
