Default 64 gto 3.90 posi rear end

Just decided the rear end in my 64. The stamping on it is a zk. Everything online says that a zk would have been for a 65 gto. Could this have still come in a 64 from the factory? I figured someone on this form would know a little more about the codes than I do. Thanks

I'm not a code expert but I would say you likely have a '65 rear end. My July 27 built (Pontiac, MI plant) '64 GTO has a rear end marked with the 64 code (ratio and letter). Also, the Zarrine & Roberts resto guide says some early '65s may have continued using the 64 format, but no mention of the other way around.

You could check the casting web for the date code - if you can read it. That would tell you when the housing was cast and probably give you a definite answer.

Look at the casting number and date code. Unless there is a lot of corrosion, you should be able to read it. If you're really interested, the ring gear has a date on it that will be easy to read.

My early 65 GTO was assembled with a 64 rear end at the Baltimore plant.

On the bottom of the differential case there is the date code of H84 = Aug. 8, 1964.

Stamped on the RH backside of axle tube is a faint P 3.23 as was used for 1964.

The LH rear brake drum has the “65” designation paper sticker of WF = 3.23

The two letter code ZK indicates yours is possibly a 1965 rear end.
I would look for a date code on yours to determine the month/year.

Chris.

Thanks guys! I don’t know why I didn’t even think of the date code. I’ll take some pics tomorrow when I get back down to my shop and post my findings. I know there’s no sticker on the brake drums as I’ve had the wheels off before and there are definitely aftermarket replacement drums on the car. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not the original rear end for the car since the car is an old drag car from the late 60s and early 70s. It’s still even got ladder bar mounts welded to the frame but no signs on the axle tube. There’s also a huge dent under the rear seat where the driveshaft broke and whacked the floor.
