intake, shortest?
Folks,
Rebuilding my tired 389, 1966. Had to goto a 400 block and added Edelbrock heads from Butler. My builder says the stock intake no longer works. I would like to maintain as much as possible the stock height (carb mount height) so that I may use the stock air cleaner. What intakes would work that are as short as possible? You didn't say what the 66 389 had for an intake that will no longer work? I assume an iron 4BBL for a Carter carb? I would switch to a 68-72 iron stock intake with a Q-jet carburetor. Height should not be much taller. Unless the Butler worked-over E-heads have the ports raised so much that a stock iron intake won't seal at the top. You will have to take some measurements or at least use the gasket as a guide.

Correct, old stock was iron intake for 4bbl carter. Moving to FiTech anyway so later model intake not an issue i guess.

Carter AFB air cleaner uses a smaller opening than a Quadrajet. Roughly 4" vs 5". That larger size is the norm now, so that's probably what the FI Tech uses. If you're dead set on keeping the stock air cleaner, be prepared to do some cutting.

Use the pancake air cleaner with the larger (67 Q-jet) base.

The iron 67-72 intake is suppose to be one of the best. Once you remove that huge center section for the crossover heat they become much lighter and easier to keep cool..
The 14x3 open element air cleaner has proven over and over to be one of the best. I picked up radiator heat deflector last winter and this thing really works!! I tested it with a thermometer with an extended bulb.. Never use one of those open air cleaner lids, they have been tested over and over to not do anything good.. It's one of those special "Pittsburgh" versions from mid year 64.
