If the car is running now with an automatic, leave it in and wait till you have the cash for a proper tranny. Spending money and time on those in the photos is likely a waste. Who knows what's inside them.

i know nothing about those transmissions, but i would not be surprised to see a tractor motor pontiac stick car run faster with a three speed than a four. one less shift and these engines don't give up like a 350 chevy if they take a big rpm hit on a shift.

as for your idea to complete the conversion with a cheap 3 speed now and get a four speed later, i see nothing wrong with that idea either, except you might want to think about the input/output spline counts.

Why do you say tractor motor? I took the 6 cylinder out lol.
Well thanks for the advice on the spline count didn't even think about that. As for what's in them I seen they sell rebuild kits for like 50-70$ i have never done a Pontiac trans but im sure I could figure it out and have the tools to do it at work.
Thank you guys for your opinions and advice....

Looks like a 70s Chevy truck three speed. It would bolt in but the only available shifter would be up to the dash. Also the “peanut” 3 speed that came behind 6 cylinders cannot be rebuilt at any cost because the parts simply aren’t available

If you can't afford the 4 speed why not look for a heavy duty Ford 3 speed that were used in 65.
