Why is "No Prep" Racing so popular now?
Do you think its because of Street Outlaws? Or, just because its more exciting to watch?

It's probably a combination of those and other factors. While I'm not necessarily sure it offers a safer environment, it does offer a legal environment to try and duplicate the street racing experience. I'm sure the large payouts are probably also causing part of the popularity.
There are several no prep events around Colorado each summer and even the lower ranks like the true street classes have purses in the 5-10K range. So all the sudden you've got a weekend of fun, that you're not risking county lock-up and the ability to pay for some healthy upgrades to the car. That's a lot of incentive.

It’s kind of like street racing lite. It gives cars with traction and people that can power manage an advantage. Anyone can run in glue.

If you go to the normal no preps and airport races there are 3 classes usually.
Small tire, big tire and street. the small tire and street give the average guy a chance to win big $$. The last airport race I was at small tire won 15k. Guy had a sbc stock block with an ebay twin turbo set up, junk basically. So average guys can compete, it is not about horsepower, it is about power management. My friend won $7500 on a $500.00 buy in, his 1/8 mile was a low 6. I am going to another airport war 5/18. I love them. No prep is great! |

I think this is a huge factor. Racers have had a gut full of NHRA.

Most no prep and airport races are water burnout only. No glue! And even if some have glue after the 60 foot they go up in smoke

Don't know why it's so popular. Doesn't interest me so can't answer that question.

Why is no prep racing so popular?
FYI 10to15 years ago the ADRL had extreme pro mods anything goes no weight limits no cubic inch limits and they were drawing 30k-60k people per day to each track and 8ish different tracks per year.I'm convinced the free tickets had a lot to do with that however they were getting a very large spectator turnout and insainley awesome cars laying down #'s or bouncing off walls.... Which for whatever reason that sanctioning body went belly up however there was a solid fan base of over 300-500k+ people that didn't have the "free" entertainment anymore. Fast forward a few years and insert the s.o.'s and "free" entertainment for that solid ADRL fan base mix in cars that when they show up to the track...bounce off walls like pin balls OR go down the track rather impressively.. the new episodes of s.o are on a night without much TV competition. Which IMO helps add to the already prexisting ADRL fan base. It also is a stroke of genius because that fan base gets to watch as the S.O. Folks as they started on the streets just like most of us,in which people can relate. Now the show has progressed and the cars are heavy pro mods now and the fan base got to watch it all start from run of the mill street cars to what they are now.... Just my 2cents
