Here's some info for you all to chew on!

Please note that the biggest Iron D port head Intake port has at best 2.01 square inches of port area, and the 455 SD head has at best 3.02 square inches.

Also note that this assumes that the Intake Manifold had atleast this amount of port area to had all the way to the junction of the Plenum.
Enjoy!

Are you thinking of questioning David Visard?
It's out of one of his books.

I know I should keep my nose out of this but as its the street forum and I have been "street" driving pontiacs engines with huge slow ports on engines from 366 CI to 455 CI for about 20 years now I can voice a opinion. The factory RA V heads flo in the 315 range stock and have tennis ball size ports. The ONLY engine I thought was lazy was the 366 with a single plane intake. When I put a dual plane on it with exactly the same carb it made a big diff in not only EGTs but how the throttle response was.ALL my cars have been stick shift cars with power brakes. As most street cars operate from off idle to 3000 RPMs I just dont see where the big worry is over 290 or 310 port.JMHO,Tom

I will second Toms comments although I only have experience with my one combo... did not feel any loss, in fact it picked up low end torque and feel going to 330 cfm KRED's from iron heads. Oh yeah victor intake from RPM as well. Didn't seem to hurt the bottom end at all. Single plane actually smoothed out some of the bucking at low low rpm...made it a little easier to drive/clutch

330 cfm @ 600 lift 1.2 x 2.375 port opening, 2.150 intake 1.71 exhaust valves.

What FPS?

This conversation reminded me of a statement made by a noted Pontiac guy during a discussion about the HUGE ports when the Edelbrock head first came out. Running 11.76 et with mild ported factory heads and a 234 degree HFT cam at the time.

With a bit sarcasm....

"I do need a set of E heads so I can run a 4000 stall converter, 4.10's, more cam and wind it 6500 to run what I do now!"

For the average tuner I would err on the big side on port volume and cam, especially for a street driven application. Would you want a undercammed smaller port that would do nothing but spin taking off then fall flat on its face by the 60' mark?
Harder on parts too if u managed to get it to not spin.
