Billet hood hinge install ??
Going to ask what seems to be a silly question. I installed a set of billet hood hinges last night. Nice looking hinges. My hood is a steel aftermarket 69 TA hood. The struts don't hold up the hood. I looked at some pics of other hinges and it appears that I installed the struts upside down when compared to those pics. Would this make a difference in how the struts operate ?? On the surface it doesn't make sense thatthis would be an issue. But .... Any thoughts ???

I would think it's possible. Think about the hydraulics in shocks, how some are set up 90/10, 50/50, etc. They may be designed specifically valved to be installed one way. One way to find for sure, is swap them and see.

I just did and no difference. Plus they are gas shocks.

Sounds like a call to whoever you got them from is in order. Hopefully just a packaging error, and they'll send you the correct parts.

Those struts come in all different strengths. Your hood may be heavier than those struts are designed for. You may have to get some stronger ones from the auto parts store.

I installed these hinges a number of years ago, I think they where EMS hinges from memory, on a 67 firebird. the struts supplied with the hinges where near useless.
I contacted the company and they said we have three strut pressures so send the first ones back and we will send the next level up, these were only slightly better. contacted EMS again same deal sent those struts back for the heavy duty struts which work ok, the company rep said we have never had this problem before, I think they meant with a Camaro hood, so after a lot a postage expense I got the hood to work ok. so for a Pontiac hood you will need to order the super heavy duty struts if they are available from the hinge maker. |
