Plastic drip rail moldings vs stainless, what was used when?
I just got my old ‘74 T/A back. It appears it came with the plastic drip rail mouldings. Why did some cars get plastic and others got the stainless steel? Anybody know?

My 75 has the plastic. My 73 has the metal. Yeah I know that doesn't answer your question but it narrows down the time frame at least :-)
Does anyone make a decent repro of the plastic version? What were the GM part numbers for the original plastic ones? |

I actually have a set of NOS plastic mouldings. I will get the part numbers from them. Weren't the stainless used all through the second gens with plastic being substituted at times? I am thinking of putting the stainless on the '74.

I don't think there's a decent plastic repro since the originals were not decent.
This thread has shown up as a page error for the last week. |

If I recall from when I ordered my car. If you ordered the decor group you got the metal drip rail along with hood edge and door sill. If you only ordered the drip rail you received plastic.

The plastic could quickly be added in a dealers parking lot, the metal type required pulling all the seal channels out and installing correctly with matching components, not hard just more involved and time consuming.

I think all 74/75 had plastic, if ordered, then they went back to metal

Jeff,
the plastic ones are the Service Replacements (over the counter). Metal ones are original. |

My '75, bought in april of '75, came with the stainless looking trim along the tops of the doors, fender corners, and windshield edge of hood,,,, and plastic drip rails.

As I said earlier If you ordered just the drip rail in 74 plastic is what you got at least in a Formula. If you ordered the Décor group you got back of hood metal, door top edge metal, and drip rail metal. This option not available on Formula's due to hood.
Oh yes, I have plastic and I an the original owner of the car and I ordered it from the dealer |

I have had 3 sets of plastic drip rails on my car, all got destroyed by very light hail. I have salvaged 2 sets of stainless rails for my car, both came from 77 cars. I also wonder why some were plastic and others stainless...I hope I can make one good set out my 2 salvage sets...
