64 GTO Axle Upgrade Questions
Upgrading dad's '64 axle from open to saf-t-track carrier + new gear set.
Apparently, new 3.23 gears are not to be found. Looks like 3.36 is the only option close to this. Who is the best source/brand for a bolt-in, locking diff. carrier and new R&P gears? (stock 8.2" BOP axle). Thanks!

This is a great question. Friday Im picking up a 1966 4 pinion 3.31 geared GTO rear end that's used since I didn't know a good answer....I paid $700. Gonna put it in my LS1 powered 64 Tempest...
But I've heard good used factory gears are the way to go.(But Im no expert on this) There is currently a local Craigslist ad for 3.23 gears R+P and third member in San Francisco Craigslist for $75...I guess you can search for a used 4 pinion posi ….. |

Some like the Eaton clutch type posi unit.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/e...BoCOSUQAvD_BwE The Chinese made Eaton knock-offs are $200 cheaper. https://www.ebay.com/i/372359330919?...3D372359330919 Yukon also makes a clutch type. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/yga-26024/overview/ Have read that some like the Auburn cone-type units. They make 2 versions, for the 3.36-up gear ratios. https://www.amazon.com/Auburn-Gear-5.../dp/B003TPFEJU https://www.ebay.com/p/Auburn-Gear-5...d=142857991424 |

The 3.36 gear will not work with your 3.23 carrier on the 8.2. You'll have to change that out as well. Recommend PM'ing Ol Pinion Head on this forum. He knows more about this type of issue than most, IMO.

I've used both the Auburn cone type and the Eaton clutch type, the Eaton is much better. The only drawback of the Eaton is it is drilled for 3/8" bolts so if you have a mid to later rear, you have to drill to 7/16". If you are making any power or intend to race get a stronger rear.

Sorry, mid 1969 and later center sections take the 7/16" bolts.

" The 3.36 gear will not work with your 3.23 carrier on the 8.2..."
Auburn also makes units for the 3.23 & numerically lower gear ratios. https://www.justdifferentials.com/AG...5420114-hp.htm http://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/...3-3-23-542099/ |
