Don't for get what day it is!
June 6. D-Day!
I watched the news this morning and read the newspaper and the only mention of this day in history was in the Peanuts column in the comics. Does this mean that we have forgotten the sacrifices of those brave men who gave so much so that we could live in freedom. I hope that there are a lot of us who do still remember and always will.

It was covered in my local newspaper.
They mentioned that the commemoration ceremonies in Europe were relatively low key this year, more things are planned for the 75th anniversary next year. |

If you asked the average person, they’d have no idea about what day it is. How quickly we forget.

Yes the 4,400 US KIA on the D-Day, never forget
Just as important though please remember the 6,800 US KIA on Iwo Jima and 12,000+ US KIA on Okinawa. It was not just a European battle!

To me 2 days ago was more important; the USN smashed the flower of Japanese Naval Aviation against heavy odds at Midway.

My father was stationed in England and flew supplies and fuel across the channel many times. His brother, my uncle Billy, flew B-29s. They are both gone now but their memory lives on and they imparted to their children the importance of not forgetting history. It really is the job of fathers and mothers to make sure their children don't forget; one generation to the next. Unfortunately the school system cannot be counted on to do this important task. They haven't taught real history in the last 50 years.

As has been said many times over, When you forget your history you are destined to repeat the same mistakes, truer words were never spoken.
Fox news didn't forget it and paid tribute to it. |

After trying to remember what the 'D' stood for, I learned from the dictionary that the 'D' doesn't relate at all to Normandy. "D-day" is a general term for any major military attack or other event.

My father, he will be 94 y/o in August, was flying a Lancaster Bomber for the first time on d-day, 1944. He was only in training and was transitioning up from Wellingtons which by that time in the war were only used for training.
They had one Lancaster on the base (Padgate in Lancashire) which was also being used for air crew training. He was trained as a pilot in Australia then in Canada before continuing training in England. He has often mentioned that his first flight in the Lancaster was on D-day. Following D-day, the tide against Germany turned very quickly. Air crew losses fell off dramatically and his training consequently fell off as the need to replace pilots was reduced. I suppose I should consider myself very fortunate that: A. He survived the war. B. my dad is still alive and incredibly well C. he met my Mother in England, married her and she is also very well Ian

Im ashamed to say I did forget. I am usually up on these things. Unfortunately as time goes on there are few veterans of this war still alive. I think the impact has lessened as well. I was born a mere 20yrs after the war ended. And growing up in the 60's it was still in peoples minds with Hollywood celebrating with many great movies I watched as a kid. Like was said, very little mention of anything to do with the war today. (I guess its not PC). My pop was a marine, but was too young for wwII and joined right after. My uncle was a pilot for the Army Air Corps, he flew the "Hump" in Asia, another accomplishment he had was flying the "Berlin Airlift". I believe he was stationed out of New Castle DE. Both are gone!

I didn't forget. Actually we celebrated D-Day this past Weekend at the MAAM WWII Weekend. "Doc" the second of only 2 B-29s flying gave free rides to WWII vets. That was something special too see happen.
I had 3 uncles that served in WWII and one in Korea. 2 from the ETO brought back war brides. One from the UK and the other from Belgium.

I can never forget as I was born on that infamous day's date in 1952.
I turned 66 yesterday,so I walked around thinking my numbers are 66 on 6/6!!...well I played some lottery tickets and am no richer for it.....as I understand it,the "D" in D-Day stands for "Deployment" of troops |

I think the term D-Day is military jargon for when a mission will happen. When the planning was going on they didn't release a date. it was referred to as "D" day. On the same note the hour when the operation would begin was referred to as "H"-hour. There was no reason that the rank and file needed to know these things. D
