t56 to 455 ?s
been searchin the web and trying to search here but still not clear. i have these parts on hand atm a 2002 ls style t56 from an f body and i have my old lakewood scattershield from my super t10. i see i can buy an adapter to bolt up to the scattershield and use my mechanical clutch which i like but it looks like i would need a extended pilot bushing? if so is there one out there for pontiacs? and if i switched to the viper input shaft would that eliminate the need for a extended pilot?
not as important but how far is the shifter location off from the 4 speed location with fbody t56? in 66 gto

Bolting any T56 to a traditional Pontiac requires more than an adapter you have to have the full QuickTime bellhousing which is almost 800 bucks. Plus the Camaro shift location is absolutely wrong for an A body from what I am told. Could be wrong

actually tick performance sells the adapter plate to bolt up in the place of the muncie/t10.
the problem is they show an extended pilot that must be used for the ls style and adapter. problem is im pretty sure its o.d. is chevy vs pontiac size. ive not found a pontiac one. im not sure on shifter location tho...seen some guys on chevelle sites say fbody was fine and others say they had to change stuff around

I don’t know I wouldn’t feel comfortable using that in my car. I’d get the right bellhousing

I just finished installing a LS1 T56 into my '78 TA with a Poncho 400. I too started out thinking/hoping I could buy a cheap adapter plate and make it all fit together and work. NOPE! My recommendation is to not even start down that road unless your primary goal is to tinker and fix- a lot. After a lot of time dinking around with the clutch/pressure plate/hydraulic thowout, I ended up going to "Weir Hot Rod products" and got their conversion kit, I actually went as far as to order their hydrualic kit as well so there wasn't any questions when it came to support, and I needed a lot.
The Weir conversion Kit, at $1K for everything and I mean everything, was expensive but, everything is right now and it all works and works well. The LS1 T56 puts the stick in the front part of my Auto console but that location still allows me to shift in all gear. I don't know how different the A body position is.

Have been using this adapter plate for over 10 years on 4.25 stroke 475 rwhp with no problems. This plate used to be the only way you could swap in a T56 before the Quicktime bell housing existed. I sourced my transmission through D&D Performance who at the time were modifying the input shafts to work with the standard Pontiac pilot bearing. I am still using the mechanical linkage also.
If I were to do it now days, I would probably go with the QuickTime bell housing....but to do it on the cheap the adapter plate works good too. |

i seen the quick time bells out there but i actually wanted to keep my mechanical clutch. and since i already have a good bellhousing to use...the lakewood i fogured the adapter would be the best route. i cant really see how u could break the adapter...its just a plate sandwiched between the trans and bell. kinda the same deal with the adapters that come stock on them for viper/ gm etc

Call Jeff Kauffman at Silver Sport Transmission and ask him about this. I just did their t56 magnum conversion and it went seamlessly. If you're curious there's an install thread on the first page of the street section im finishing up.

I have the 2.66 first .82/ .64 OD I like the 3.90's, keeps me just over the grumpity hump at cruise rpms 2200 or so. Not so much first gear that its gone right away. Trap rpm in 4th seems about right, so yeah its good for this combo. 28" tire

Stickboy and PerformerRpm,
When you used the plate for the T56, what pilot bearing/bushing did they use? Thank you, Joel |
