Tranny Leak- Winter only
Last summer I completed my 68 Lemans restoration and took it to a transmission specialist to check for leaks that I experienced over the previous winter. One suspect area were the lines from radiator to tranny needed tightening. It's an ST-300 2 speed. They checked out the car and I drive the car in Aug-Sept ran/shifted great with no leaks. Totally dry underneath. Put the car away for the winter in Oct- still all dry underneath. Around the end of January I noticed a puddle of tranny fluid on the garage floor. Wiped it up and another smaller puddle resurfaced a week later. Can this be fluid draining from the converter when the car sits over time? I thought the shop would have pressure tested the system to check for leaks. Does anyone know of deep tranny pans available for an ST-300?
I'm planning on taking it back to the tranny shop but I'd like to consider all my options. I was considering a dye test but I don't have a lift. Any other recommendations? Thanks! |

My T 400 does the same thing, if it sits a month or more. Had a new front seal installed years ago, didn't help.

I've owned and driven these cars for 30 years. They've always leaked while parked for the winter. Then, when I start driving them again, tightens up and stops leaking til the next winter storage. One area to check that both my ST300 cars leaked from was the servo cover on the side. It's a big o ring that I'd change, and it would stay dry for a year or two and then eventually start leaking from there again. It runs down the side there making it look like the pan is leaking but it's actually that O ring on the cover. Clean the thing off with a good dowsing of engine cleaner and hose it off. Then dry it and look at the bottom of that cover. It's the round thing on the right side of the tranny above the pan

Thank you for the advice. I will replace that ORing as I'm sure it's original to the car. I know it's not the pan as I've replaced that gasket twice to eliminate that leak source. I also have replaced the speedo seal and output shaft seal. The car is old but only has 56k on it. I've replaced or reconditioned whatever I could to keep it original.

it's not as simple as the other seals though so just take your time. It's spring loaded so you have to clamp it down deep enough, to pry out the big C clip that holds it in then gently let it come out and off. It's been years, but I think I rigged something with the pan off to grab from behind it.
