Default New 76 TA, motor upgrades?

Howdy all,

I just picked up an original 76 TA, 400 4 speed car. It has never been apart, has 90 K on it, and runs and drives very well.

My question is, if I choose to rebuild the engine-original block and heads-what would be the best way to increase horsepower and torque? I am considering adding earlier heads, cam and having the carb rebuilt for my new mods and altitude. I want the car to be kept original for shows, as far as that goes, so I am unsure about headers.

Any suggestions?

Use a stroker crank kit to gain cubic inches.
More power gains from that.

I wouldn't stroke that original block. Build another stroker and save the original motor if you ever sell it.

I agree. That weak 500557 block is not a good candidate for a stroker build.

If you add earlier heads, it is no longer "original for shows". Would look more original to use your 6X heads on a 455 or non-original 400 stroker shortblock. Hey, the '76 was the last year that used a 455.

"...I am unsure about headers..."

You can go with RA3 type exhaust manifolds. Not original, but look closer to original than headers.

I agree with the gang.

- pull your original motor, seal it up, and store it safely away
- get another 400 block, and install a stroker kit
- get another set of 6X heads, consider have SD Performance CNC port them and set them up for whatever cam you choose to use
- 2.5" outlet Ram Air exhaust manifolds will make it look "stock'ish", and you can tweak some heat shields to further disguise them.
