Default Street/Strip!

Well a week ago I just got my engine installed back into my black "Punisher" 69 GTO from one of it's many transformations. It was first a raw 463 CI, solid roller, 87cc E-head engine, then it was a same combo 6-71 blown, then 8-71 blown, then pulled and placed in my other GTO 8-71 blown, then taken out pulled apart and freshened and put back together raw with a few minor upgrades and placed back in my other GTO for a summer of racing and then pulled and had stand duty for a couple of months till I could get it back in the black car. Since it's a pump gas, non filled engine and it has highway friendly 3.73 gears I decided to drive it to the track (65 hilly, curvy miles) on Saturday in 97 degree heat and make a few passes. Stopped at the local non-ethanol station and filled up with 91 octane and had an uneventful drive to the track, engiine got no hotter than 190 on the mountains and everywhere else it ran 170 degrees.

Once I got to the track and paid in for TNT I went and parked next to some friends and switched rear tires out to a set of old Hoosier drag radial 295/65-15's I had on some old steel chrome reverse rims. When they called TNT I was the last one to the line so had a solo and did a nice little burnout and pulled up to the beam, staged, yellow, yellow, yellow, leave..., leave.... nothing but rev limiter. WTF! Didn't hear anything weird so shut it off and got out and pushed it back with help from lane guys... weird clunking noise? gotta be the rearend... Get it back to the pits, jack it up and Passenger side tire wobbles and spins with no resistance. Broke PS axle but luckily C-clip eliminators did their job well. Called Brother in Law and he brought his trailer. We watched races and then headed home... For some reason everything was so raw and felt so right and seemed so old school that I don't ever want to trailer that car again unless it is broke. Saving for new axles... Drive em folks!

PS - this engine went 10.28 @ 130 in my other GTO at Tulsa Pontiac Race in 2010 and was the engine I beat Dave Anderson in the GeeTo Tiger with so it makes a little bit of HP...

Ouch! No doubt the year of broken parts. At least the damage was minor and the repair relatively easy.

Are we going to see some Mosier axles in your future?

I've been running them in my 8.5 for quite a few years now, they came with "C" clip elims, no issues to date.....Cliff

Has anyone had any good experiences with pressing off a c-clip eliminator and then pressing it on another axle without teaing it up... Strange brand?

We pressed it off and got it on another axle. I drove it about 100 miles yesterday and last night and all seems to be good. True street/strip car heavy on the street...

Low 10 sec engine, stock 12 bolt axles did not stand a chance. I broke 31 spline (9") Mark Williams axles with a high 10sec 455.
I even broke the 1/2" ARP wheel studs once. Got lucky, did it backing up out of the pits to make a run. Why it did not happen at the line or at the big end. Could have gotten real ugly.
Went to 40 spline, gun drilled, star flanged Moser axles with 5/8ths studs. Overkill, maybe for a 11 flat car. But I broke3-4 9 inch rears, couple T400s but the 455 is still going strong. (1990)

add one of these for pre-load on the third member caps and you're done. I have this on the '79 trans am and have zero issues with stock rearend and running drag radials. My problem is splitting cases on 4 speed trannys. .....but the rear stays together.
