horn not working
69 Firebird
on the horn relay there is power at the terminal for the 2 wires to the horn the horn works if I hot wire it so I know it`s not that. is there a fuse for the horn? can`t see anything on the fuse box. how can I get it to work just to get through our inspection for now until I figure it out?

I'm not familiar with the horn button on your car, but on mine the horn button (under the cap) works by grounding the horn. I'd test it by touching a screwdriver across the metal button and metal steering wheel. If it honks, then your horn button is the problem. Also - check the horn button to see if it's hot. If not, then the problem is somewhere farther back. Good luck.

Work just enough?
If your have confirmed a good ground at the Horns , and you have 12 volts at the Horn relay then have someone work the Horn and listen at the relay for the sound of the relay closing, no noise= no closure= no Horn. |

Determine which wire at the relay is the one to the horn button. It's probably the smallest gage wire. Ground it. If the horn works then the problem is in the grounding circuit to the steering wheel. If the horn does not work when that wire is grounded then you need a new relay.

I have found that on my 69 bird grounding the green wire on the horn relay connector activates the relay and blows the horn.

thanks everyone.
turns out the wire that goes from the button through into column had come loose. it has a plastic connector that has broken so it let it come out. I`ve glued it back in so hopefully it will stay connected.

Just curious, does your horn blow without the key 'ON'? Mine only works when the key is 'ON'.

Sounds like you need that " Horn broken watch for finger" bumper stickers. Glad to hear you got it figured out. I ended up with a push button switch on the console just to pass inspection and just left it that way as I never really need it.

Mike
mine works without the key I think. Pontibeast did you just run a wire from your push button to the terminal on the horn relay? or did you completely rewire up to the horn?

A friend of mine did it for me so I could pass inspection back before I had it declared a classic and put antique tags on it so I didn't have to go through inspection anymore. I will ask him. I do know it only works when the key is on and the original horn button was broken when the previous owner put a quick detach steering wheel on the car for security reasons. I switched back to an original style steering wheel but didn't fix the horn as I don't like to fool with wiring. I usually end up getting shocked as I always forget to take the battery cables off first. It is an aftermarket horn and replacing it with a factory horn is on the list to fix.
