Default Limited Slip/Posi Traction

According to the PHS for my 68 GTO it was built with a 3:55 and positraction. Over the years a previous owner got rid of the posi unit. It will smoke the right rear until you let off the gas. Can I install a posi unit in my 10 bolt housing? Does the ring and pinion have to come out? Does the complete housing need to be removed? I am a decent backyard mechanic, but this may be a little out of my skill range. How difficult is it. Will the ring and pinion need to be set up again with the correct clearance and pattern? I may be ahead trying to find a used complete rear with the correct gear and posi. I would have no problem changing the housing.

I bought a 8.2 Eaton type posi carrier for my 70 from a board member Jim - J D Race and Restoration in Richfield Ohio 330-six 59-7 one one 7. I can't remember his board name.He was about $200 cheaper that other suppliers and it was at my house in 2 days. My carrier had 7/16 bolts so he had to drill it - no charge. You also have to buy an install kit ( about $130). I took my whole housing to a local guy who knew what he was doing for install and set up. He charged me a couple hundred dollars. Didn't want to screw it up and ruin the original 3:55 gears. I believe Ol'Pinion Head also sells carriers and sets up rear gears. You could pm him too.

Are you sure the post unit is gone or maybe just worn out? Either way, I consider myself a decent mechanic but don't have the tools to install and set up a rear end. If you are going to do it or have it done, you will want to replace all of the bearings and seals and it requires a new set up. If your gears are good you can reuse them.

I plan on buying the Auburn 5420114 from Paul Knippen's Muscle Motors, he is here on the forum. He can beat Summit's price:

What do you guys think my chances of finding a complete housing assy with posi ? My 68 Goat is a numbers matching 400 H.O. with four speed, console, and the 3:55 rear that does not have a posi unit in it. I don't know where to find the numbers on the rear housing, but I have a idea that sometime in the last 48 years the rear housing has been replaced with a open rear. I'll tell you this, if I could find a burnout contest somewhere I'm sure I could win it with this pegleg rear.
