Default 71 GTO Underbody paint color

I am doing a body off restoration on one of my 71 GTO's. I always thought that the bottom of the body was painted a semi-gloss black. I bought this car several years ago from the original owner. It was almost all original paint but needed restoration. The car was under coated when it was new by the dealer in NJ. When we stripped the undercoating off we found red oxide paint. It is a 04D, Framingham build car.

My questions are, could the undercoating dissolved the black paint? Or, is it possible that the black paint just came off when we stripped it? Or could it have been painted red oxide from the factory? Any help is greatly appreciated as I want to paint it properly. Thanks.
