Power vs manual steering, ?
Has Anyone ever done a track test manual vs power steering? I'm thinking about going back to manual since I don't really drive it on the street anymore. Yup I know just one more step closer to becoming a race car.

Way back when I 1st went manual I dont think I saw a difference I was at high 12 range back then. For me it was a plus not having something that leaked or an extra belt to worry about losing. A slower car (70 nova)lost a steering belt mid track(1/8 mile track) and I broke out by a very small amount but it wasnt my quickest pass of the day so hard to call. It felt quicker lol.

In drag racing, "slower" steering is better and safer, so I would think manual steering would be better. Most drivers' natural reaction is to over-correct, when things get dodgy.

I don't think you can put more than about 5 HP thru a single V belt.

I use a newer S10 pick up manual box. It was a bolt in. I like it besides turning the wheel while the car is not moving.Once your rolling I like the feel better than the old power steering.

X2 Changing to a manual box is easy. Readily available, lots of rebuilt or new on Ebay. Agree with all the above posts.

PS pump is "doing nearly no work" when wheels are kept straight.
I saw no diff for 12.0 ET & put the PS system back on, sold the manual box.

So does yours have slack in the box once off center? Mine is tight on center but seems to get slack as you get more turns-about 4 locl to lock. Lares the remanufacturer of the S-10 I used(4 bolt cover) says that is normal for a manual box-but been awhile since I drove a manual.

No slack yet, it only has about 1200 miles on it. I like the tight feel of the manual while going a little above the speed limit.
