How do you get the tie rod to not spin while you tighten the nut for the steering knuckle on a 64 Tempest. Everything about this disc brake upgrade has been an uphill battle. Now when I go to tighten the steering knuckle bolt it just spins the tie rod.

Make sure the tie rod threads and nut are in good shape.

with a large pry bar, leverage the tie rod tight into the knuckle socket. Hold heavy tention and tighten nut at the same time.

I don't get what you're saying. How do I put tension on it?

the problem is the tapper either the tie rod is incorrect or the tapered hole it is going into is worn out, I would check the hole by applying some type of machinist blue or even use a marker to "paint the inside of the hole, insert the tie rod in and spin it, it will show if the tapper is worn out too much.

Disc brake upgrade...my guess is it's Chinese spindles, the tapper may be incorrect.

Unfortunately that will not tell the OP if there is a problem with the tie rod or the steering arm, and bad tappers are what cause tie rods and ball joints to break their pins!

Sounds like the threads got damaged during removal.....

Try a new nut. If that does not work it must be the thread on the t/rod is damaged.
This trick usually works: get some coarse valve grinding paste & smear it on the taper. Get a jack under the t/rod ball joint to apply some light pressure. Screw on the nut [ grinding paste will stop rod end from spinning ], but just snug. Undo nut, separate the joint, clean out the grinding paste & reassemble.

Yeah the threads are boogered I guess from over aggressive removal . I ordered two moog ones. Cheaper than I thought. If I thread the old ones out and thread the new ones in as closely as possible to the old ones how long can I get by before an alignment because its just not in the budget right now?
