A gentleman I work with that has a few big motorcycle wins under his belt in a couple classes running Harley's has tried coating about everything at some point. The only thing he coats now is piston pins. He didn't comment that he found any power, just longevity in that part of the engine build after coating that specific component.

He's talking about rear gear oil. Not motor oil. And 0/10 is chicken chit. 0 /2 and 0/5 is trying! But not for me.lol

Next year a few of the OE's will introduce oil that has 0W/-7 viscosity. Also 0W/-5. That's some thin oil! All about fuel mileage with the OE's. That's a negative viscosity number I am trying to show.

Only as the oil temp comes up. Plenty of localized heat at bearings under big power loads even with cold oil.

Increase oil flow at bearings and it takes away more localized heat.

IMO oil flow at the bearings is more important than oil pressure at the gauge... That said, (but before you jump on me,) consider this...

Why the big pressure needed on a blown nitro or alky motor? The oil gets seriously diluted with fuel... which evaporates to a gas under the heat of the loads imposed on the bearings... gas doesnt lubricate (it would take an enormous amount of gas psi and likely volume to keep a bearing floating on it)... so you flow more oil with greater clearances than you would with undiluted oil(NA app), it takes alot of psi to keep enough diluted oil flowing to try to keep it cool enough to not evaporate the fuel mixed in it.

Default Coatings are Evolving.

Mahle Motorsports utilizes a piston skirt coating process that is called Grafal. It's a "Non-Sacrificial" coating that is designed to last 100,000+ miles.

"Hard Anodized" piston coatings have been used by manufacturers for over thirty years and I can personally attest to the fact that they are NOT sacrificial.

Keep in mind that all coatings are not the same and vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Coatings continue to evolve, so anything that may seem to be fact today, may not be tomorrow.

Having first hand knowledge of NASCAR powertrain coatings, I can say that they are used a lot. Although, Micro-Polishing processes have replaced coatings in some situations.

Have a good one,
Larry S.

Were going to use CP hard anodized pistons and will be DLC coating the pins. Thats all.

To tell you the truth if you're using DLC coated pins it says you don't have stuff together on clearance vs pin bending vs bore profile in the piston under cylinder pressure. I hate it because it's expensive but it has it's place. I've had to put two engines into production with steel pistons and DLC coated pins due to running out of time. I'm working projects to remove it!

For limited resource programs/low volume it has it place for solving pin/piston/rod joint issues.

Can I assume from your bio that "we" is GM? I couldn't locate any web info on GM's work with steel pistons; can you point me to such info? Are these diesels?
