A friend told me about the The New Generation of Tremecs.
He is a Mopar guy & plans to buy it for his 1970 Charger SE 383.
Stroker 496 BB being built.

New Gen Tremec supposedly Good for 800 ft/lbs & 1,000 HP.
Not sure if that is true or not.

I assume that when I'm ready, something like that will be the way to go

I can only speak for a firbird but it wasn't a bad install. Not really any worse than changing a clutch disc really. Pull old tranny, install new. Didn't have to cut any body but I did have to relocate the provided crossmember which resulted in drilling and nutserting (sp?) the frame at a proper location.
I did it on my back on jack stands. Now keep in mind that if you convrrt to hydraulic setup fabrication and fitting time triples in time, work and complication BUT I'm a 50 yr old guy with no formal auto training and I did it so....

My brother's '65 GTO came from Pontiac with a 4 speed and 3:90:1 rear. The rpm's never bothered us, but of course in '65 gas was also much cheaper.

There is a ST10 trans with
3.29:1 1st
1.72:1 2nd
1:1 3rd
0.8:1 4th
