I've been course working the Silver State since 2005. Just something neat about sitting out in the silence of the desert before the subtle roar of tires and engines build up then roar off into the distance.

Here is a photobucket album with some pictures and video's from last month.

My most popular youtube video, the sound speaks for itself.

And not Silver State related, but here is a video I took of Big Red leaving the line at Bonneville a few years ago.

I was at the 1989 Ely-to-Hicoh race.

One person's (wife of the driver) was killed when a non-Z rated tire on their Ferrari Testarossa shredded a left rear tire at 170+ and went off the course, went end-over-end and ended up on it's lid on fire. The driver was busted up, but lived.

The Ferrari owner/driver had to sign all kinds of waivers at the tech inspection the day before because his tires were not Z-rated. His argument was "if Enzo fitted the car with them, then that means they are good enough." WRONG.

The EMTs life-flighted both driver and passenger to Las Vegas right in front of me at the finish line.

Other than that, the race was a lot of fun to watch. At the time I owned a BMW M6, but I didn't dirve it at the race. There was one in the race that averaged about 160+ with a top speed of about 170.

A YouTube video about that race: https://youtu.be/e-PFfwxR3SQ

I'm surprised that they'd let passengers ride along in this race. I remember reading in some car mag years back about a guy destroying an Enzo in one of those "top speed on a public road" events. He didn't even pre-drive the course - just hit it at top speed the first time. A slight rise in the road, taken at 200 mph, sent him into orbit.

Edit - I just noticed you weren't talking about the Silver State race. The race you mentioned, and the one I described above, are clearly lacking in safety rules.

Very nice Jack - the guy with the 200 mph 70 T/A did mention the Big Red Camaro and built his T/A to see what he could do

The Passenger is the Co Pilot.
They Recommend you have one in the Race Entry Details.
A co pilot is your 2nd set of eyes.

RJ Gotlieb had a Co Pilot.
He didn't ride solo.
A Car Magazine Reporter.
The reporter was thrilled & Terrified how fast & Powerfull Big Red was.
I found the Article as told by the Co Pilot in the past.
I will search for it today.
Yes Big Red did only 224 Top end.
Amazing because it was all Natural Aspirated HP.

Aluminum heads have a Nasty habit dropping valve seats on Endurance engines ran aWOT For extended periods of time.

RJ Ran 90 miles flat out.
Race over & he won in 19 minutes time.
Engine never dipped below 6,800 RPMS.

Titanium Valved & Titanium Connecting rods used.
John Lingelfelter built BBC 540.

People say he shook the ground at the starting line.
Drowned out all others.
And Ferrari owners lost their smug grins.

One of my Heros & Favorite cars growing up.

I am not all Drag racer & Street Racer.
I like Endurance & Road Racing too.
And Dirt track racing.

All Racers hung out there.
From a 30-40 mile radius.
At night they did Burnouts in front of my old house.

A few months ago I had bumped into Tim Fleenor who is a member of our GTO club and one of the master mechanics on the Big Red team. He was overseeing the frame off restoration of Big Red at one of the very best autobody shops in our area. They were finally ironing out all the minor mishaps and bruises sustained over the years to make the car picture perfect.

I'm sure that the time and effort of the restoration just adds to the pain of the team when the car caught fire while testing on the 13th of this month: Big Red severely damaged
