8" race convertor on the street?
Has anyone tried running an 8" convertor just for the heck of it? How was it?

I did it for years, and it didn't hurt the converter. It ended up in my drag car, and only now am I pulling it out for a converter that more closely matches the new engine. I probably had about 8,000 street miles before it was dropped in the drag and became race only. It is in the car in my avatar photo.
The converter would stall at 5,200 RPM behind my 462, but actually engage and start moving the car out about 2,000 on the street. It really didn't feel that loose driving around town, and was totally acceptable. My previous 10" converter only stalled at 3,800 RPM, but it wouldn't move the car until about 3,000 RPM - and it always felt like the trans was going out. So at least in this case, the 8" was much more streetable than my previous 10". I ran two B&M stack coolers and never had a problem with heat.

Mine isn't an 8" but a 10" that flashes to 5000 on launch. Slips a reasonable amount at low RPM's while driving on the street in town. Pretty decent on the highway at 2500 and above too. I'd say it all depends on the converter and how well it moves the car at lower RPM's.

THANKS guys!! I figured I would have to listen to all the "Negative Nellies" as they are usually the first to give opinions about things they have never personally done, very nice to hear actual experiences! My current plan is to try the 8" Coan 4800stall convertor behind a "Jim Hand" type engine in my 65GTO. I expect to probably change it later, but that is what I have right now and if it did work OK on the street would probably be quite FUN!

I've got a 9" UCC in my car, moves the minute u put in gear, light throttle to get it move, flash stalls to 5000, and tight up top and cruising! 4.10 rear.
