Default 79 trans am rag joint repair

Hey , replacing my gear box. The rag joint has some play in it , but not much. I see its riveted what's the best way to replace it ? Don't see any 79 joints on eBay will other years work? Rest of intermediate shaft looks good should the rubber in rag joint be strong enough so not two metal parts don't touch when u turn wheel? Thanks

Since this is a safety critical part, here is a entire brand new unit. No need to worry about failing rivets..

Thanks ordered the immediate shaft today. Not sure if I like the shroud on it. Will shaft just pull apart if I want to remove it ? Worth the extra money to have a piece of mine thanks again

If you want to remove that shroud, you would have to cut it off. I would leave it there if possible. It keeps the rubber better protected so it will last longer.

You could have gotten a rag joint from Rock Auto for 16.00. The shroud looks kind of ............well I will leave it at that. Rock Auto is a good source for hard to find parts

look again I have have never seen rivets. I found this picture on the internet and your rag joint should look like this. Also here is a good write up on replacing just the rubber on rag joint.

Since slip joint slop is common in these cars, why bother rebuilding the shaft when a new one is fairly cheap?

79-81 intermediate shafts are different from that one. They are riveted together. Here's one:

The rag joint is giving me a headache. I ordered the lares 205 one from rock auto. It's 3/4"-26 and the splined coupler fits my box but the OD of the entire joint is smaller. It would work fine but the bolts don't line up just right. They are about 1/4" to far apart.

I've looked into the eliminator kits. They are also to small. All the larger od ones have a different coupler dimention. That's how I found this forum. Where did you get yours?

The GM one I got at the Dealer, they were still avail a few years ago, I don't know now. You would have to have them run the number. The spare was for a 79. It's an aftermarket though. it is for sale. It may be GM after all, the guy sold off his project, it was a 1979 T/A, he has parts from the 80's perfect stuff. I ran across a nos camel pkg tray, I almost sh&t my self when I saw it in the box. He was a nOS freak, it could be a GM joint, there isn't any box. I sent you a pm.
