mine is a 326 2sp 256 gear and what Dick said is pretty accurate. I have gotten as good as 20mpg.
I hope to put in a 068 400 with a th350 to double the hp and still have the same mpg. |

Back in 1971 thru 73 I ran my 66 Tempest Custom from Massena, NY to Rochester, NY the opposite when worked at Eastman Kodak. 326 non HO engine, 4bbl, 2peed ST-300... rear gearing unknown but was probably 256. I averaged very close to 25mpg every trip back and forth. No lie as I kept track of the gallons used and mileage driven. My parents taught me that, as they did it with their Pontiacs. It was always about 10 gallons one way for 249 miles... house to house.

My '67 GTO ragtop with stock Q-jet and 9.3:1 400 gets about 21 mpg at 75-80 mph with a TH400 and a 2.56 posi out back. In town not so much. Your wagon probably has a 2.56 or 2.78 gear....keep your foot out of it and I'll bet you can close in on 20 mpg hiway!

WD, remember..... gas is not the same today as it was back in the 60s and 70s. This E10 crap will not give you the gas mileage real gasoline did back then. Today you will lose 3 to 4 mpg with this E10 compared to gas back then.
And if E15 comes along to replace E10, DO NOT use it at all in a classic car engine. Auto manufacturers will void warranties on todays new cars if it's used in them. And yes, States are selling E15 today. Read this from Snopes.... http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/e15.asp
