27 to 18 with '67 in the lead. I must say that I thought it would be much closer.

There is a lot to like on about cars. I've never owned a 66 and have to say the tripower has "wow" factor that always appealed to me. That being said, I've owned a few 67's including a ram air car. The hurst dual gate and turbo 400 is a huge upgrade to the 66 auto. I'd vote 67 by a nose!

A dead tie, IMO. I've owned a '67 convertible for the past 33 tears, but my first car was a '66 GTO, and I've owned more '66's than any other year early goat. The '67 has a better grille and the stainless on the sides is nice. The '66 has those mean louvered tail lights. The '67 has a great TH400.....the '66 has a lowly 2 speed auto. The '66 has a tripower 389...the stuff of legend and song. The '67 has that great new Quadrajet 400 with big valve heads....and on and on. I like the '66 interior MUCH more than the '67, the pleats and the chrome ribbed console. I replaced the crappy plastic '67 window cranks and rear view with steel '66 pieces, which actually hold up....Both years are great, all else being equal, the '66 is looking a bit better, to me.....

OK....I just voted for 1966, and I haven't owned one since 1991! I hope my '67 will forgive me!

67. Grille . Tail. I wish the 66 interior was in the 67. I feel like if I'd bought a 66 , my opinion would differ. Right now though, a 67 causes more endorphins to be released.

That, and dual master cylinder.

67. The grill, tail lights, large stainless rocker trim, interior pattern and 11 more ci, 3 speed auto. The only thing the 66 has on the 67 was the 3x2 setup. I've always thought that gm took a really cool 66 and made some big upgrades and refinements and that's your 67.

1966 is my favorite year because of the taillights. I also like the narrower chrome trim on the side. But the 1967 has the HO motor and disc brakes so it's not an easy choice. Overall, the top three years for me are: 1) 1966; 2) 1965; and 3) 1967.

66 for me too. I wonder why? LOL A 66 GTO was the very first car I owned back in 1970... for 1100 bucks To me those 66 tail lights with 3 lights each are the best of all GTO years. Reason being you can do the Cougar and Shelby trick of sequential blinkers. And they're one of a kind never repeated again.
The 66's grills to me look like the car has a solid front to it with the full header panel. The 67's looks like something is missing up there. Tho the wire mesh is the coolest part of a 67 GTO's frontend. It's also the reason I've run with the 67 wire mesh in a set of 66 grills off and on for the last few years. Sure messes with some people's minds too. LOL

The '67 has the cleanest styling of any year GTO in my opinion.
The special wider rocker trim serves to accentuate the 'coke bottle' styling and makes the body appear longer and sleeker. The seamless tail panel with nothing on it except for the four very simple and tasteful tail light slits, clean, clean, clean! No emblems other than 'GTO' on the decklid, much cleaner than the '66 that has the tail light housing seams, PONTIAC letter emblems and other busy styling 'clutter' in comparison. Then of course you get the disc brake option and a much safer dual master cylinder, your choice of Rally I or (making their debut for '67) the all-new Rally II wheels , the beefy race-worthy 3-speed TH400 with His 'n Her shifter replacing the ST-300 2-speed of '66. The 400 engine is so far superior to the 389, with screw-in studs and pushrod guideplates in the completely-revised better-flowing big-valve 2.11"/1.77" cylinder heads and a much stronger engine block casting. No Tri-Power, but plenty of performance and reliability upgrades to more than make up for it. Ram Air/HO exhaust manifolds made their debut in '67 as well. Personally I love the old 389 & 421 Tri-Power engines very much and they are truly the only ones I'm interested in these days, but it is what it is. It's a tough choice and both the '66 and '67 are pretty much equally fine in my eyes, but the slight nod goes to the '67 for me.

Ever follow a '66 with the sun behind you? The reflection off the chrome eyebrows basically hide the stop lights. Got a friend that his '66 has almost been rear ended twice because of the following vehicle having no idea he was stopping. Wonder how many have been sent to an early demise because of this?
I have to give points to the '66 TriPower, but the '67 model year saw so many other improvements.

There has been a lot of talk about the rear ends on these two years. I agree that sometimes the tail-lights on the '66 can be hard to see. I think this is mostly caused by the housings not being well grounded. I always run a ground wire to both tail-light housings & that solves the problem. The '67 rear end looks nice & is similar enough to the new for '67 Firebird tail end so that the cars have a familial look. Perhaps the fact that I replaced my '67 tail panel myself (And trust me, it took a lot of work) before the car was even ten years old due to it being rusted out colors my opinion a bit. Like Gary, I also put '67 wire grill inserts into the '66 grills on one of my cars & I think this makes for the best looking setup.

Ive loved the 66 as long as I can remember. I like the 67 as well but tail lights on the 66 win me over every time.

I voted '67 - not only because I have one, but I prefer on the 67
Mesh Grille 400 Turbo 400 w/ dual gate Two piece steering column (not available in the '66 right?) Dual master cylinder Interior seat design Wider rocker panels Hood tach option Rallye I and Rallye II Cleaner lines overall - only says "GTO", not Pontiac Like on the '66 Tri-power tail lights front fender badges |

I prefer the '67 for both styling and engineering. All of the reasons I feel that way have been mentioned, so I won't recycle them. But I will add locking seat backs on the '67 to that list.
The only body feature of the '66 I do like is the tail light design, but they honestly were hard to see in the daytime. I never saw them at night, but plenty of '66 owners saw my '67 tail lights. In the early 70's I did lots of night time street racing. Of the hand full of '66 GTOs that I ran against, I never lost. My brother had a '67 4 speed that was just as fast. |

The best way to make the 66 tail lights seen is to black out the rear panel with a matt black finish. I'm planning on doing it to my 66 in the near future.

If I thought the 66 was the better choice ,I would have bought one...But...I put my money down on the 67. The stainless rocker moulding , gives it a skinny waist..better tail lights...and a .60 over 389 = 400 cid.And a dual master, grill mesh too !!

I was wondering when someone would mention the voting with your checkbook issue. I realize that the '67 Firebird siphoned off some '67 GTO sales, but when it came to people voting with their checkbooks for the favorite year GTO the '66 won hands down. It not only beat the '67 by a wide margin, it was the best selling Muscle Car of the entire Muscle Car era.
