Default 301 factory oil pump

Does anybody know if the oil pumps that were used in 301 engines were reduced capacity than the standard v8 pump? Thanks Todd

Don't know about the originals but replacement wise they can use a low performance 2 bbl 40 psi 5/8" pick up tube model , or the increased volume 60 psi 3/4" pick up tube model.
The 60 psi will be all you should need so if your concidering the 80 psi SD 455 pump forget it!

Steve,
If my mind reading skills are working... Todd might be looking for a way to reduce parasitic power loss in his stocker engine.
I remember reading that Scott Burton made some modification to his oil pump in his B stocker. Seemed like his cut down the pump gears and housing? I'm not sure. I'll be asking him about that, next time I see him at a race...

I was thinking of modified a 45psi pump by boring the 5/8 inlet to the std 3/4 inlet (pickup) I talk to some one that runs a std 45psi 5/8 inlet in his car he told me he runs 40psi all the time throw the 1/4mile run. (He runs the5/8 pickup) ???? A small inlet scares me??

Well the 301 does not have the amount of bearing surface crank wise that all the post 1958 motors do so in theory they need less volume and a 5/8" pick up system might cut it, but dependant on how high you buzz it to I would still want to see 8 psi per every 1K rpm!

I would sooner have 15 psi too much and run a 5w20 oil to get the friction level down!

Often the 60 lbs pumps come with an extra spring to lower the pressure.

The factory 301's still use a 3 inch main bearing. The rods I think are 2 inch. Depending on rpm you still have to overcome the centrifugal forces to get the oil into the main journal drilled passages to the rod journals. But the 301 is not a buzzer so, keeping it around 5000 RPM may warrant the 45 psi pump?

Larry Stewart used to modify the stock Melling pumps. He would reduce the height of the oil pump gears and replace them with a brass spacer. He also used to cut grooves into the side of the housing wall to help with cavitation. I have one of his modified pumps on the shelf. Could not see where it gained me any HP on the dyno when I tested it. May work for a small displacement higher revving engine. Mine was a 455 application.

I do not want to sell, might come in handy one of these days.

Larry Stewart still might make them I am not sure. If you want me to measure any thing on it let me know. I good machinist should be able to do the mods easily I would think to a standard Melling pump.
