"6 qt system capacity" Canton Oil Pan, how much oil?
I have the 15-452 Canton pan in my 68 Firebird. Works great. I AutoX and Road course the car.
https://youtu.be/vPkQiFvl804 https://youtu.be/YpKRYboqarU https://youtu.be/FGQiZfdW6-4 As most of us know, Butler recommends ~7 qt system capacity (incl filter) and Canton recommends the stock amount: 6qt system capacity. I trust Butler and run 7 qts. But the world will never know why Canton insists on saying 6 qts.. Maybe it's CYA on their part? I had the conversation with Butler a few years back and I was pretty insistent as to what Canton recommended and they said that I can measure myself how much oil it needs in the pan if I prefer. If I remember, the recommendation from Butler (or maybe it was Canton... I went back and forth to each several times saying what he said she said) was for the oil to be filled to no higher than the bottom of the main caps. I haven't done this yet. But if one was able, he would do this with engine out of the car, pan off, fill the pan with oil with it oriented properly and measure how many qts until the height matches the depth of the main caps. Anyone ever done this and/or agree this is a valid method? Does anyone have the ability to measure this? Please post and lets document this once and for all! Thanks. Next opportunity I get I will measure it and report back, but likely 6-12 months out. |

I checked both my 15-452 and 15-444 off the car for capacity to the baffle. I forget if they were to Canton's capacity or a quart less, but both pans matched Canton's rating and I came to the conclusion that Butler is correct.

Just a fwiw, when I called Canton tech they told me similar. Rated it for a 6 quart "system capacity", as stated in their catalog, and that allows 1 quart of oil for the oil filter.
If you fill a typical oil filter, let soak in, then repeat that a few times you will find it does not take a full quart. Probably less about 3/4 quart or less. .

I always put 7 qts in mine on an oil/filter change. If I remember correctly, 6 qts filled it to just below the baffle. I added another qt for the filter and the oil not in the pan while running.

I also add an extra quart with having an aftermarket block with the lower pan rail. 7 qts, my oil pressure guage would "bounce" some on the big end, added an 8th quart and problem solved.

Measure how far down form the pan rail the factory dipstick shows full then measure the pan and see where it is. On Canton's generally about right at the baffle. You can see that through the lifter bore area in the block. You can also drill a hole in the baffle and use the factory dipstick.
