Default Stamped steel SD exhaust manifolds?

Hello all,

I'm in a discussion with another gent about the SD manifolds Pontiac had back in the day. We all know there are the cast aluminum ones and cast iron ones, but does anyone have any recollection or hopefully, pics of the stamped steel exhaust manifolds? I think they were designed for NASCAR use perhaps. Sure would appreciate it if any of you has a pic of these things. Kind of like sighting a Unicorn! Ha!

Thanks!

Kevin

Thanks Tom. Unfortunately, I don't have Pete's book. I sure would like to see the big car stamped manifolds if you have the time and opportunity. Maybe one of these days, someone will repop them. I'd be one of the first in line if they ever do.

No chance of a repop, they were stamped out in 2 pieces and then welded together. The big car one really look like the cast SDs,takes the same collector I believe.Maybe some one with Pets book can scan the pics and post.Tom

Asked Mac McKellar about these a while ago, he could not recall the specific part, but, though they were probably fabricated with a low-cost Kirksite die set, maybe by an outside shop.

My speculation: They were looking for a solution that could possibly go to production that was lighter than iron, but less work than welding up individual tubes and a collector.

I recall the gasps when Chevrolet and Ford both did a basic tube header for the Corvette (semi-block hugger) and the 5.0 Mustang (shorty) -- I think some accountants fainted.

The Boss... Hey thank you very much! Got in a small discussion about the SD manifolds on FB. This is perfect. Now they'll know what I'm talking about, which sometimes, can be a rare feat. Thanks again!

NASCAR didn't allow tube headers in the very early 60's, I believe it was about 1965 before aftermarket headers were allowed.

My foggy memory would have said they were plain steel, but the blurb in the book says "stainless". Tom- were your sets stainless?
