Default Which spark plug wire looms?

Today I'm planning a big order so I'm shopping and having a good time. One of the things I'd like to improve is my spark plug wire neatness. I haven't found an aftermarket loom kit I like yet.

What about some of the factory loom brackets? Where do they go? Can anyone post up pics of a few so I can figure out which ones will fit my setup?

(My car is a 64, engine is from 70s, P4B-QJ intake, 8mm wires so I assume I may need to modify the bracket to carry the wires, etc.)

The stock wire brackets I've seen bolt to the back of the heads to hold the wires away from the engine as they route around the corner of the engine/head. And then there may be one towards the front attached to the valve cover bolt to keep the most forward 2 wires in line. But may only be the plastic retainers similar to the ones in your photo.

See the attached photo from Ames catalog.

What year engine is that? I'm interested in getting that same water neck and upper radiator hose.

As for the OEM looms, if they bolt to the back of the heads, that's perfect. I'll call Ames and figure out which ones to buy. Thanks!

Everybody has a different idea. I like the less the loom shows the better the loom is plan. I use one thin black 4 wire loom per side. I think the biggest thing about making the wires do what you want them to is having the correct length wires. Not wires sold as fitting a Pontiac but wires that you made to fit like YOU want them to. I also like the 135 degree plug end boots so the wires can be angled to suit....towards the back in my case.

I must admit, these look better installed than they do in catalog pics. Thanx!

If you are planning on using thicker (larger diameter) wires than stock, the stock type reproduction looms will not work. They are made to hold stock and stock replacement wires.

I figured it would require some modifications to fit them

Exactly. What I've done in the past is stripped the plastic coating off the OE ones, opened up the holes, and re-dipped them with Plasti-coat. They look OE and work well.

The problem with the ones that hang off the valve covers is that there's not always enough room for the end, where the 4 wires are across. This is true with some boosters, and almost always when it's an AC car.

True too on lengths, you HAVE to use cut-your-own wires. I've seen many application specific sets with one or two wires way too short, and one or two wires way too long. And most require the #1 position on the cap to be X.

What David Jones did is clean, and you can use the regular clip-on separators between the loom stand-offs to further organize.

I now use the regular chrome Moroso looms for big block chebbies, but it takes me 2 sets to do a Pontiac, because they only come with 2 4-way holders. And the way I prefer to route them it takes 4 4-ways. (I've gone back and forth on this)

I also prefer the MSD 8.5 super conductor wires, black, even if they have the grey (multi-angle) boots, as close as I can find to something closer to the OE look.

Yeah, I knew that was coming!

Check this thread, it's an older pic, but should still give you an idea. I would have to search for better pics when I get home, can't check at the moment.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...ighlight=looms

Also explains how I 'folded' one mount over to make it reversed, but you will get the idea once you look at it.

I think my last loom setup was similar, but it's apart now and can't recall.

I also drill small holes through the retainer and the bracket, and use a little screw to retain them, hate when they pop off the stands. Not sure why they don't make them that way but oh well.
