Default Is there a legal way to

obtain a new VIN tag. My son purchased a 1964 LeMans, three years ago. The vin tag was gone. He obtained a bonded title using the VIN from the rear frame rail. With a bonded title if nobody claims the car in three years, you get the original title.

I would call the local court house in the town your in or where you bought the car & they may have that answer for you. Also you may try the guys who do the interior tag for the firewall & see if they can make up one for you. If you have a shop that could just stamp out the tag for you you could trim up the tag so it looks right & then buy the correct pop rivets they sell on Ebay .

Contact the DMV, Texas will assign you a new state assigned VIN if the original is lost, stolen or missing.

Smile Check with these guys

http://www.datatags.com/

According to a couple other forums (Corvette's) this is the place to go.

With sufficient documentation (and it sounds like you are fine with documentation), they may be able to help.

I'm presuming the bonded title indicates the frame VIN number? So you don't need a State-issued number because you already have the original number.

Years ago, I saw a 1964 GTO with a loose VIN tag due to rust-out. The owner just JB Welded it in place. Looked hokey but it worked for him.

Good luck!

AJ Backeast does a very nice job with trim tags, but I don't believe he makes VIN tags.

I assume the title has the full vin on it? The car is still legal as it is. I'd just make one myself, buy the correct rivets and install it.

But if you're afraid of that route your state should be fully capable of giving a state assigned vin.

He does not make VIN tags. Already been through this on a car that someone ripped the VIN off of. Only way I know of is to get a state-assigned VIN or make it yourself.

except '64's don't use rivets...spot welded. Follow thru on your initial idea of going their legal route...just to be safe.

GUys, WITH all the documentation and the waiting period and title the state will issue THE SAME NUMBER, and install it on your car with rivets, and it will not look original, BUT its legal and the same original number..
Moral is dont loose a WELDED on tag

My bad, I don't deal with LeMans/GTO's usually. Same thing applies, just replace "rivets" with "spot welds"

Default Here you go.....

These Canadians are already making Chevrolet VIN tags.
AND they're having the tooling made to stamp PONTIAC VIN tags!!!

My email inquiry was answered quickly with: "I am having the tooling made for the Pontiac VIN tags right now hopefully I'll have them in about a months time."

Here's their CL ad:

1955 1956 1957- 63 Chevy blank Data VIN tag Belair Impala Corvette (CANADA)

I have blank Chevrolet data tags available for the following applications. Blank Aluminum tags for 1953-1959 Corvette's, Stainless steel tags for 1955-63 Chevrolet cars and trucks except for 55-59 Corvette's ( see the aluminum tag) and stainless steel tags for all 1965-67 Chevrolet cars and trucks. I also have the Rosette Rivets to apply the 65-67 tags. Ideal to replace your lost or damged tag or to complete your restoration to like new. Get more information at my website www.classicdatatags.com Email me with any questions.

Blank tags wouldn't be a big problem to reproduce. The BIG problem is to get the correct fonts and then be able to correctly reverse stamp your vin on that tag. And on top of that it's highly illegal to reattach that to your car.

the stamps and stamping machines are around...they have been making VIN tags and stamping them for a long time...its just hard to get someone to admit it and to do it..the corvette guys need all the help they can get..the early solid axle cars have the VIN tag screwed to the steering column...yeah the steering column...and many where lost and many have been made..occasionally i see NOS tags show up on ebay...pontiac included.

like said 64s and earlier is spot welded on and they just fall off...

since its not rare or worth a million..a DMV assigned tag should be more than good enough..and doest hurt a car like that..and you know youre safe and legal...
