The Quick Ratio Manual Steering Box had a 20:1 ratio, the standard Manual Steering Box was 24:1.

The Q.R. box should be fewer turns lock to lock.

Never had a Manual Box, so only going by what I read.

'64 AMA specs show 4.2 turns lock to lock for the Power Steering Gear. The ratio is 17.5:1.

They also show 5 turns lock to lock for the 24:1 Manual box.

Problem is, that does not check with the math.

24/17.5 x 4.2 = 5.76.

Elsewhere I read the 24:1 box is 6 turns lock to lock.

So I suspect the "truth" is about 5.76 turns as I believe the Power Steering Box is consistently reported as 4.2 turns.

That means the 20:1 Q.R. box will be:

20/24 x 5.76 = 4.8 turns lock to lock.

So I would say if you have just over 4-3/4 turns lock to lock, you have the 20:1 Q.R. box (and can probably assume it is the original, per your Billing History Card).

If you have almost 6 turns lock to lock, it isn't the original box.

I'll be curious to know if this checks out.

I get about 4.3 or 4-1/3 lock to lock so must be Q.R. Thanks for the info.

Is your Air Cleaner snout visibly cut?

According to the '66 Parts Catalog, the '65 Cal Air Cleaner was p/n 6420984, describes it as Chrome.

The GTO Resto Guide also says 6420984 for '65 Cal and says it was Chrome.

The Resto Guide says 6420984 also used in '66 and it says there that the base was gloss black with a chrome lid.

It is a little confusing to me since the Resto Guide doesn't as clearly describe the Cal Air Cleaner in the 64/'65 section, only in the '66/'67 section, but since yours shows it as a 6420984, wondering if it is really hacked or not.

I have no idea what it should look like. Just seems outrageous that anybody would have hacked the snout.

Before you attempt to modify the snout, I'd want to be real sure the one you have isn't already perfect.

I believe it was cut, the edge is sharp and not cut square but close. It is clear that it was probably cut to clear the incorrect? upper hose as they are still close. Makes me wonder if the CA air cleaners used a different hose that is not readily available so this was done instead.

Here is a close up pic.
When they say chrome I guess they mean just the lid.

Nope, no special Rad Hose required for the Cal Closed Circuit Crankcase Vent set-up.

Instead, it looks to me that you have a "will fit" hose rather than an O.E. preformed hose.

Compare the "bends" in the preformed hose in 65blackplate's pix to your own.

Without the preformed bends, the end of the snout probably rubbed on the hose. Rather than fix it to eliminate the chafing, looks like they just decided to hack off the offending end of the snout.

That is really too bad.

Perhaps the snout is common to other GM air cleaners of that era, so you may be able to fix it.

That looks like it would work, Also FWIW the CA '66 OHC Sprints used one as well.
Just to broaden your search option;

A picture of my very original, Fremont built, 65 GTO, four barrel, four speed car. Only the lid is chrome. Another in a long line of cars I wished I would have kept.

Section on 64-65 air cleaners (page 317) second paragraph, last sentence says only the top was chromed on the 65 CPCV system air cleaner.

California style air cleaners for 4bbl. GTO,

1964, Big all chrome top that sits on a black painted flat base.

1965 and 1966, reverse of the 64's. Big black painted base (tub) with orange lettered screen on side (as seen in post #27) and a flat chrome top.

First three pics below are 65 GTO's with the 614 option CPCV air cleaner and OEM radiator hose which clears the snout perfectly.

Last two pics show a 66 big cat Calif. air cleaner that "I think" is correct for the 421?

Default 65 air cleaner

RAII 4-SPEED, that one will not work it is close. The one Jeff H. shows appears to match mine, if you look close at it you will see the horn attaches to the base it is a square, I think there are 4 spot welds that hold it. The pics of the 421 by 60sstuff is the same. So it appears any CA. 65 or 66 OHC, GTO or 421 will work. The 389 or 421 are perfect match, the OHC I may need to remove the horn and attach it to my base? Thanks all for looking and even searching ebay, the search is on.

According to the '66 MPC, the closed crankcase vent Air Cleaner 6420986 was used on ALL '65 big cars with 4 bbl 421 (except Police) and the following year only the '66 2+2 with 4 bbl. Looks like the other '66 big cars did not get the one with the chrome lid. FWIW.
