Default 389 pricing

I'm looking for a rebuildable 389 and I found a 1966 WT engine that is very complete from carb to pan, fan, wiring etc.. even has the bell housing and clutch. The air cleaner is the only part missing. It's not stuck and was last run 20 plus years ago. It's just what I was looking for and it would probably start with a little work. I offered $650, seller is firm at $1000. Is this really worth $1000 ?? Thanks!

I don't think so, but I have been wrong before.

If we all at least knew what state you lived in, somebody might be able to refer you to someone....or maybe even a member has what you want. IF you live in Swaizeland, that might be too far away...

Is the WT code what you need for your car?
Regardless of the price. I would want a written guaranty from the seller that the block will hold coolant pressure as in no cracks!

From your info the engine is a 66 GTO engine and I assume it is "numbers matching" as far as casting dates, etc. Since the 66 engines were not stamped with the car VIN number, I think this engine would be well worth $1,000 to anyone that owns a 66 GTO that doesn't have its original engine (and there are tons of those kinds of cars).

As I recall, you have a 65 GTO project which I assume you are wanting an engine for. Accordingly, a 66 engine isn't an enhancement fit for your car but it is a good engine otherwise for your car.

As I recall, you are looking to use a 66 tripower on whatever engine you use. If you did, you would end up having a 66 4bbl intake for sale which price you could apply to the cost of the 66 engine.

Also, if you already have some components like bellhousing, flywheel, alternator, de-clutching fan, distributor, etc., then you could sell those and apply that money against the 66 cost.

Especially, since this 66 engine does not appear to be "frozen" (and literally not damaged structurally) I think it is well worth the $1,000 asking price.

I've been out of the GTO scene since the mid eighties, guess I got spoiled when I could buy a 1960's GTO for a few hundred $$ and drive it home! Anyways, I have an iris mist 65 lemans with a GTO hood, not building a goat clone though. It currently has a BBC and muncie 4 speed, but I want to go back to a pontiac engine and 3 speed manual trans. I don't care about engine codes, just wanting any year 389 that will fit the 65 chassis. I liked this one because it's all there and I don't have time to look for the correct brackets, pulleys etc... I already bought the dearborn 3 speed from a member on here and I picked up a tri power last week. Sounds like the seller isn't too high on his price. Thanks! P.S. I'm located in Missouri 65101

Well, the 1966 WT code 389 turned out to be a 1965 YN coded 326 with 093 heads. Will the timing cover. balancer , ps pump etc.. bolt onto a 1972 400 short block?

Yes all those parts will bolt right up to the 400. The blocks are externally the same.

I wanted to be sure the parts would move over to the 400 before I make an offer. Thanks for the info!
