Default Fuel gauge float

So after finding everything I could and retesting my fuel gauge sending unit and grounds I read in the svc manual that it is normal for the gauge to float on acceleration how much does your gauge needle move if at all ? 66 GTO

Mine moves 1/8 tank when I take off. But, I've got bigger problems, haha. Mine only reads 3/4 full when it's topped off, and when it reads empty I still have a half tank.

Perfectly normal for fuel gauges in cars of this era to float back and forth, going up or down steep grades, sudden stops, hard accleration etc.
After all, the gauge is controlled by a floating arm in liquid. The arm moves up and down as the fuel moves up and down.

Thanks guys it's just been so long since I have driven the car with an operational fuel gauge tech back then wasn't so great makes sense it would float some.

Back in 1970 my 1st 66 GTO's fuel gauge never floated. The one I have now moves the needle 1/4 no matter what....unless the gas tank is full.

LOL... not really Greg. Even tho gas was .32/gallon, we didn't make all that much per hour. Yeah we could fill the old gal up with 5.00s worth, but getting that 5 bucks wasn't all that easy at times. I made 70 bucks a week and my payment for the GTO was 47 bucks and change per month. Insurance was expensive as all hell too, plus other things to pay for. Money back then was just as tight as it is today being on retirement. For many days I rode around on 1/4 tank of gas and crossed my fingers I wouldn't run out before pay day.

Yeah, it was .47 a gallon when I got my first car and I still had to skip lunch in school to get 5 bucks so I could get half a tank for the week. I was a skinny kid...lol
