Vinyl top install revisited.
I installed a vinyl top on my car last spring, about a year ago. I was going to clean some of the over spray glue on it , I am using the 3M glue remover. I noticed that the vinyl became soft and some of the color seemed to come off. What to use.
When I did the roof I used the spray glue recommended here. From about a foot away it looks good but when you get close it has some lumps or the roof seems wavy like the glue bunched up, nothing bad but I notice it. Otherwise the roof came out great, the seems are straight and it fit great around the rear window. Do you think if I let the car sit in the sun the lumps may go away or am I going to do the roof over with adhesive in a can and a roller. |

Do not use spray glue. The glue I used was what my upholstery guy said to get. DAP Weldwood Landau top glue. He said it was designed to be used in high heat situations and that was all he used to use when he did them for a living.
http://www.dap.com/product_details.a...=50&SubcatID=9 It was $32 @ gallon, which was cheaper than four cans of spray 3M. Charles |

Glue must be applied to both surfaces 1 thin coat per surface & not tacky to the touch when putting the the top on , looks like you have excessive glue in them areas .

I see the spots affected by the glue remover. Is it possible the top be redyed to save it?

No way to fix that. I think I am going to rip it off and start over. Last time I used spray cans, this time I will use canned contact cement and a roller to get it more even. |

spraying is the best way to get even coverage and you do need to do both surfaces

No, it's not. The PROPER glue and a roller is the best way.

ok
I have never seen a shop or assembly plant use a roller to put a vinyl top on a car

A professional in a shop that has done a thousand roofs and has the proper spray gun to do the job and an amateur restorer who is doing it in their garage with spray cans is two different things. I am going to use a roller this time. I know the coat will be even. |

a special gun is not needed just a cheapy with a larger tip will work
think about it if a roller puts it on so evenly every body would roll the paint on their car

Now that was a dumb statement. I hope it was intended as a joke. Paint and adhesive are two completely different things, and he's not in a shop or the factory.
