Default UK-Col's `67 TC-Goat

Hi all

Thought best to introduce myself as I think i'm going to be needing some advice on this one!

As you may have already worked out from the title, bought myself a little project and shipped back home to me in the UK.

1967 Tempest Custom with a few GTO bits. Rebuilt 400cu in, TH400, vintage air, loads of new interior, etc etc.

I thought i'd asked all the right questions, and got all the right pictures before buying it, but theres nothing like seeing it on your drive - not quite as described!!

BUT its my first V8, and I don't care what needs to be done. Will just take a little longer before we ae on the road.
Happy to have it in the garage and getting stuck in already.

Couple of pics below, don't be kind, be honest

Col

It looks a lot better than mine did when I first got it. What are your plans for it? If I am being completely honest I have to say I don't like the wheels on it.

Thanks, yeah looks great from a distance. Unfortunately a fresh coat of paint hid alot of "interesting" repairs. I was told it was rust free, and technically thats true i guess, but where I would expect rust is either full of expandable foam, or just air! I have pics and will post as I get to those bits.

As for the wheels, fully agree, they will be going.
Plan for the car is pro-touring look. Didnt want to change about an original GTO, so this is perfect for what I want.

Going back to bear metal in a week or so, so can see all the issues and build from scratch

Maybe the seller meant to say the rust was free as in no charge for it!

Haha, yeah good point. I just thought was a "special" lightened edition!

So whats the deal with expandable foam, is it the "new environmentally friendly" filler?

Few things I need to sort pictured below

First I'm sure this outer section of the trunk should be attached to rear quarters, rather than just filled with foam

The whole of the rear end needs throwing in the trash. The axle housing had the spring mounts cut and re-welded, but not just at DIFFERENT heights, but not even in the same orientation

I'm sure the upper control arms should be straight

Managed to get the windshield and rear screen out, all just held in with sealant, no proper seals at all. Looks like the rear screen to trunk lid has been replaced but the corners of the package shelf are not exactly clean

Welcome aboard!

not too bad of a start, hands and fist over what I started with as well.

Wheels would have to go, be interesting to see if any of the typical repairs were done correct.

If you are going to the metal expect, window channel rot, rocker panel, trunk, front floor board. Hope its not too bad but as stated alot of us have started with a lot worse.

Congrats on you new project! Look forward to following your build.

Thank you kind sir.

Just waiting for a previous post of mine to be uploaded, had some pics so I guess needs to be checked, but shows some of the things i've found already.

Looks like the lower windshield panel, and the rear lower screen panels have been replaced, but it was a shame everything else has been filled with expandable foam. Think i'll be needing a few bits!

I'll see the extent once I get the layers of paint and filler off, should be fun though!

I would bet you are one of the very few 67s in the UK. Motor looks pretty good. Have you taken it for a good drive yet?

Yeah don't think there's many of us, that's one of the reasons why I went for it. And that I'd had enough of Jap stuff.

WRT driving it, erm...... no. would have loved to before starting the rebuild but if you look at the post with the pics couple below this, you'll see why I went straight for the strip down.

I will be in the seat asap, but quality of build comes first. Plan on whole axle assembly, brakes, wheels, suspension the lot! will make it "future proof" in case the 400 cu in doesn't kick out enough power

UK, I saw a guy who used expandable foam on his '30's car as a sound deadener. Used it in the A-pillars, rockers, etc. It took awhile (about 5 years) but it ended up destroying the entire body of the car. It is corrosive to metal and draws moisture. His entire car corroded and rusted out due to the foam. It was a total loss. Not rebuildable. Like injecting salt water or bleach into your car. Whatever you do, you need to get that stuff out of your car ASAP if it's not already too late. Seriously. Good luck.

The rear spring perches were probably moved to jack the rear end up to accommodate the large wheels. And they were relocated to shift the axle, again to make the wheels fit.

Good luck. At least body panels are available for it.

Thanks for the heads up, already on the case, splitting the car this weekend and blasting back to metal so I can see what I'm dealing with

Hmm, quite possibly. Its all junk anyway, axle seals are toast and brakes are no longer usable. Disc conversion on the cards I think

Too true, another reason I decided on classic american muscle, you guys seems to have everything for your old cars....well nearly everything.

Now can I get hold of replica dash and package shelf? The metal of the dash is either corroded away or been cut away so theres not a great deal left.

If not available, might I be able to modify (if required) dash from other '67 A-Body's?

UK-Col, when you order a new package tray replacement after the shelf is repaired, get the one with the mesh on it. It's better by far than the one without it. Only problem is the mesh is plastic, unlike the originals that were wire mesh.

As for the metal shelf itself, I don't believe there's a replacement part. You might have to get one out of a parts car.

Check with Dynacorn and see if they make one or can make one for you. http://www.dynacorn.com/

Or here. Same company but different link: http://www.restorationperformance.co...orn/Categories

I`m hoping for the advice thing for sure. Never intended it to be total frame off, but you know how it goes!

So progress, well I think so anyway

managed to find more rust. Has previously just had filler poured into it. Whats the best way to deal with this then?

Also found more expandable foam just behind the firewall all the way along left to right

And under the dash. Looks like most of the dash steel has either rotted away or been cut away. Lower passenger windshield corner shows exactly what geeteeohguy said!!!

Nearly ready for blasting, so hopefully high velocity Aluminium Oxide will clear all the rust, filler and foam

Haha yeah but when you're 4500miles away its a bit difficult to "pop" round!!

I'll just have to do it properly, spend a bit more time and learn some new tricks. can't say i'm not disappointed, you always hope for truthfulness from people, but that life I guess.

All help in the repairs and resto-mod that will ensue will be much appreciated

Sorry you got taken advantage of, but good luck with the resto. Sounds like you will be doing it right. I think with that foam, this was meant for a quick flip, and they were probably lucky to find an overseas buyer.
