Default 65 GTO stock type exhaust options

Im looking for a system for my 65 GTO and want stock simple appearance in 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch, with a sound similar to stock but a little more aggressive.

I currently have a very old stock replacement 2 1/4 system with Dynomax 17731 mufflers and have been very happy with the sound.

If anyone has comments or pics of Gardener/Classic/Waldron systems please post them up. With regards to fit, it would be really interesting to know if Pypes/Torq tech comes close to stock in a 2 1/4 system.

Im just in the process of replacing my tired 400 with a very healthy 455 and will be switching to ram air manifolds.

I'm on the fence about the X pipe, and really on the fence about muffler choice. Jim Hand had me sold on the 17749 Dynomax, but that was ages ago and I imagine there are some new improved muffler options that are quiet and flow well.

Your comments would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Nobody here ever used Classic/Waldron/Pypes/Torq Tech/Gardener on a 65?

I put Gardner on my '64. It's cammed up a little and the sound is just sweet enough without being obnoxious. I was looking more toward stock looking, which it is. Don't know anything about crossovers and such. Sorry.

I used stock Gardner. They do have a Turbo type option for stock system. I'm pleased with system and the tone. I do have a true 11.3 motor however. These guys are also super nice to deal with.

I had Classic put my system together for my '64. 2-1/2" 67 Ram Air head pipes and 2-1/4" tails. 14" turbo muffler on right, 17" turbo muffler on left. I used the 2-1/4 tails so I could run splitters. The sound from these no name mufflers is perfect for me. No drone. Fit is nice, all factory bends. I'm sure I'm giving up some power not having mandrel bent, but, I wanted stock appearing. I posted some info about a muffler screw up by Classic in my build thread here: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...=597475&page=5

Further down the thread are some pics of the tails with the splitters finished.

Remember if you go this route you either need 3" longer left muffler or 3" longer head pipe than factory 67.

Oh I forgot, the sound. Here's a YouTube video.

This engine while stock appearing has a 4" stroke, ported heads and a pretty healthy hydraulic roller cam.

Thanks Ron,

I just had a quick read of the entire thread, the car is beautiful. From what I could see the system appears to fit well, and as far as I know Classic seems to have the price point advantage over Gardeners and Waldrons. With all else being equal it looks like I will give them a call tomorrow to see what they can do.

Did you choose the basic, or more aggressive muffler option?

I ordered exactly this kit on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-GT...c751ab&vxp=mtr

Note, it still shows equal length mufflers, which will not work unless the left head pipe is extended 3". Not sure what muffler types they were, but sound good. Ask them what they supply with that kit.

Also, I sent my ceramic coated flanges to them to use. No way to get them on after the pipes are bent.

Thats great, thanks again Ron. How are you enjoying the car these days? I just watched your before/after video. Boy that car was rough to start with, incredible job you did!!

You're welcome. Let me low if you have any other questions.

I've got just over 500 miles on my car now. It's a blast to drive. The 5 speed makes it enjoyable to get out on the highway and run some miles. Last weekend I took it for what was supposed to be a short 15 min drive with my son. An hour later we had to stop for gas to be able to make it home. It's pretty much debugged now. Going to show it in concours at GTOAA nats again this year so still trying to keep the miles down.

Good luck with your 65.

What I used on my 65 fit was perfect either the one Ron used or this one listed it came out of Ohio . I didn't have to make any modifications . http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-Po...a2bf48&vxp=mtr

Fit looks very good on that one also. Interesting that they are both out of Ohio, I wonder if its the same supplier?

I installed the Pypes system with X-Crossover on my '65 with 14" DynoMax 17733 mufflers. Fit with minor tweaking. I had to cut ~1-1/2" off the RA headpipes to mate up to the system.

Great looking exhaust, I was really curious about the fit on that Pypes system. Have you had the car fired up yet to comment on the sound?

As an aside, I notice a few brackets on the frame I have not seen before, just beside the mufflers going up on an angle. Is this to re enforce the frame?

Thanks

I haven't fired it yet. Almost ready to drop the body on the "new" frame.

The "angled brackets" you see are reinforcing braces, which were originally installed on manual trans cars. The Tempest is being built as a mild Pro-Touring car. Upgraded brakes, suspension & drivetrain. 12" 1LE disc rotors, 2" lowering spindles, 12.7:1 steering box, tubular a-arms, etc. Modern day interpretation of the 350HO with a 2004R trans feeding into a 3.55 Limited Slip rear.
