Getting Close To Putting The Engine In! Last Minute Things!
Alright gentlemen, engine and tranny are built. 72 354 with #16 heads RA IV cam Headman Headers Offy intake Proform 650 DP 1.5 Ratio Comp Roller Rockers and a gear drive. Matching TH350 with a full manual valve body. I have two things left before I can put the motor in the car:
1: does anybody repop the radiators for v8 cars? or is it more worth my time just to buy a fancy aluminum modern one and make my own mounts? anything in between? 2: where can I find motor mounts that will let me bolt the 72 block in the 63? or do i have to have the fab shop that's doing my rear end do that too?

Northern
I installed a Northern aluminum radiator. 19x26 inch Chevy/GM Race Pro. PN 209675. Measures 25.375x19.625x3.125. Fits almost identical to stock -- only relocates inlet from top pass side to top driv side. Approx $200.

I used a similar Northern radiator, also. I got one with the the correct transmission cooling. It turned out that I forgot about getting one with a drain valve, so had to add an external one in the lower hose.

I used the universal styld biscuit style motor mounts. I put a 61 389 in a 62 Tempest. The part number from Summit Racing is TRD-9314. I used the original 4 cylinder L brackets from the engine to the mount. Just take the time to get the spacing right. I think we had my engine in and out of the car 4 times to get it right.
I tried the 4 core copper radiator that was the stock side to side and top to bottom dimensions. It was not enough to cool the 389 in Ohio. I then talked to Griffin radiator tech people. I gave them my maximum radiator core opening size. The radiator that they told me to use is working great. 98 degree air temprature the engine runs at 180 when moving, it has never gone over 210 when stuck in heavy stop and go traffic. The best example of that was when I got the new guts in the axle. 25 miles that took 1.5 hours in rush hour traffic. I never got over 30 MPH when we were actually moving. That was the day that the temp stayed at 210. |

That Alumitech will be 2.5X+ what the Northern probably will and that was 5 yrs. ago.

It isn't the radiator material that matters, it's the fin and tube design. You can have an updated design core fitted to the original tanks and it will cool as well as an aluminum rad of the same size.

motor mounts
I put a 1975 Pontiac 400 in my Tempest using 1963 V8 motor mounts. Aftermarket new ones are avaliable or OEM ones show up on ebay quite often. This works if you are using a V8 crossmember.

Be a little careful when buying motor mount PN's! Later "A" car motor mounts look identical but make the engine set ~3/16" lower. Probably ok but don't use a mix of both (don't ask why I know this). John
