Default What would you expect to pay???

I'm looking for input here, curious what people think things cost in the HP world of engine building.

I received a project just after the first of the year, it's just about ready to leave. When it was brought to me, it was a running bracket engine, customer said he noticed a drop in oil pressure the last time out.

After we broke the engine apart, we found a cracked forged crank, pistons hitting the valves, the pistons down in the hole .024" and material all thru the engine from a broken windage tray. While the engine is apart, the customer wanted to change the rod bolts, Scat H-beam, do a complete freshen, upgrade to a roller cam and a complete assembly ready to drop in the car. The heads have been ported, but the intake wasn't touched, so the plan was to port the manifold too.

What do you think you would expect this type of project to cost???

The parts cost right around $2,200.00. Imported crank, the standard bracket style race stuff, this isn't a barn burner here, somewhere around 650 HP. But to correct the engine, it did require a fair amount of work, it wasn't a straight forward race freshen.

Against my better judgement, the customer didn't want to spend the money on new pistons.

It amazes me that people still put wind age trays in there motors.

if you had 2200 in parts seems like a lot I would say around 3-3500 out the door

$7k...this is being conservative considering i had a similar engine rebuild about 8 years ago and it cost about the same as I stated. ****s not cheap. Depending on the shop you get what you pay for...

I didn't want to cheat and look at the other answers so no idea what anyone else has posted. I'm going to guess between $6000 and $7000 which would include the parts.

I just through together some prices off the top of my head and come up with $7000-$7500 without seeing what all work it may need. No less than $6500 for sure. These things add up quick so I would say $7500 even $8000 wouldn't be out of the question.

I figured in:

Block decking
Bore and hone with deck plate
Normally I would figure in align honing, but didn't here because it sounds like that may be fine.
Installing cam bearings
Prepping block, cleaning, removing and installing gallery plugs
Balancing crank
Re-sizing rods with new bolts
Mounting new pistons and checking rods for alignment
Honing piston pin bores for proper clearance
Honing/touching up pin bushings in rods
Valve job
Resurface heads
Replace guides if needed
Port match intake
Polish crank
Assemble race engine

Parts wise I figured:

New crank
New pistons
Rings
Bearings; rods, mains, cam
Roller cam and lifters
Pushrods to match roller cam and lifters
Oil pump and screen
Timing set
Head gaskets
Misc. other gaskets
New Valves
ARP 2000 rod bolts
Valve springs
Spring seats
Valve keepers
Valve seals
Valve retainers for roller cam springs

I'm probably forgetting something, but these things add up real quick. The days of the $3000-$4000 builds are long gone!

If the parts cost turn out to be around $2200., as Calvin said, then I think 5-6000 would be about right.

I built a motor last year, for all the machine work and assembly, bill came to 1500.00. This included a head port blend. Now all the parts to build the motor came in at 7k.

If i did it locally, which i usually do, I would need to factor in location, some shops have much higher overheads based on location. I would say in my neighborhood (unfortunately) i would expect to be close to 8k. Sales tax alone is 8 5/8% ... on a $7500 bill that is almost $650 in sales tax.
