1984 700R4 help
For my 84' T/A Pontiac swap.
Seems all kits are listed for 87 & up. What's the difference? Whats the popular choice of parts & rebuild kit! What Mods are you guys doin to make these live with our torque monsters? Thanks guys............ |

Not to hijack your thread, but I am considering a similar swap. Also looking into the adapter gear box that attaches to the tailshaft of my turbo 400. Haven't done my homework but interested to see what responses you get here. thanks.
Mine is for a 70 GTO, there's a little more room under there than your TA |

Google 700R4 and look at the Gearstar web site. They make new units with upgraded guts to handle big tourque and horsepower. They did a system with adaptors to get the transmission and starter to fit a 61 389 for me.

LOTS of difference between an 84 700-R4 and 1987 or later unit. I could write a book on the subject....oh...I did:
http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/buy_book_T.html A quick run down without going to far in depth. The 84 will NOT have the hardened sun shell, hardened pump rings/more vanes, hardened stator shaft, smaller L/R and OD sprags, and different configuration for the fwd, overrunning, 3-4 clutches. Those transmissions got a BIG makeover in 1987 starting with the aux valve body units, so they are the better cores to start with, or plan on upgrading an earlier core accordingly.....Cliff
