Default How Do You Think It'll Run?

I have this crazy hyd. flat cam I want to try in a 350 with ported small valve heads. CR about 9.2:1, ported factory intake, Q-jet, headers, 2.5" exhaust.

Cam specs are

214/214 @ .050"
106 LSA installed straight up @ 106
.290" lobe lift

Car is a manual trans with 3.73 gears.

I think it'll sound like a dragster at idle and pull like crazy from about 2800 - 5500.

Am I way off here?

Leave the ICL where it is or advance it a couple degrees?

What ratio rocker arms? That's a really small cam In my opinion. Really tight lobe seperation too. I couldn't tell you how it will run or sound though.

I have a choice of 1.5 or 1.65 rockers.

Yeah, it's pretty small but bigger than what a lot of people recommend for 350s around here (seen the specs on the 066?). 214 @ .050" is a reasonably healthy cam in a 350.

And yeah, very tight LSA. That's what intrigues me about it. Should give it a pretty serious sounding idle while still being streetable. Probably a really narrow powerband, maybe 2800-5000 or maybe lower, like 2500-4800???... but I've got plenty of airflow which can help extend the upper end in a cam that has a lot of overlap for it's duration.

Sounds like a nice cam for a hot street 350.

Should really come alive with the 3.73 gears and a stick.

Run it straight up with the 1.65 rockers.

Gonna be a fun street ride.

Thanks for the input - I was thinking the same thing. It's not a drag car, just a toy to have some fun with.

That cam is not even equal to the factory 068 cam that would have come in the 1969 350 HO motor but for more valve lift.
Since you ported your heads I would take the time and spend the 50 bucks to get them flow tested ( one intake and one center exh port) just for the simple fact of finding out what the exh to intake flow ratio now is as you maybe able to go with a single pattern cam and pick up some more compression.

If you do still run that cam, adding the 1.65 rockers would be the way to go provided that you clearance the tops of the 8 intake push rod holes in the heads.

The somewhat old Isky 270 mega cam would be my choise if you found that you need to shop for a single pattern cam.

With any cam you should advance it 2 degrees just to compensate for normal timing chain strech.

Not to be a wise ass, but if you think that can will sould like a dragster, you need to get out to a race track a bit more!

068 cam is 212/225 @ .050" so this cam actually has a couple more degrees intake duration and a fair amount more lift.

With a 1.96" intake and 1.66" exhaust, I'm sure the I/E flow ratio is fine for a single pattern, especially with 4-tube headers and free flowing exhaust. I've gotten 75% ratios on 2.11/1.66 heads, so betting this will be higher than that. All that exhaust duration really isn't necessary in a car with a good exhaust. The 068 and other factory Pontiac cams were designed to work with manifolds. Pontiac's own engineers knew they could make more power with narrower lobe separations and shorter exhaust durations if they were allowed to run headers. Will this cam be "optimum?" Don't know, don't care, that's not the point.

Not about to spend a dime more on this combo than I have to. I have the cam sitting on the shelf and the engine on a stand in the corner of the garage and the car needs an engine, so why not use it? Was just curious if my feeling about how it would behave was in the ballpark.

And yeah, I'm exaggerating about the dragster idle, but with a 106LSA and a fairly advanced intake centerline in a 350, the idle will definitely have some chop to it. With a manual trans I can set the idle speed low enough to make it sound nasty...
