'65 Balancer question
So the original balancer I took off my 65 had hand drawn lines labeled 35degrees. I bought the repop 2 piece 6 bolt from Butler, and it has 2 lines for TDC and ?? They're pretty close together.
Question is, how do you set timing with a balancer that has no markings for degrees? Do I buy a can degree kit and mark it up myself? Alternately, I have a new one piece 4 bolt powerbond balancer 68 - later right? Can I mix and match later balancer and crank pulley with '65 bracketry and pulleys on the top side? I assume no from what I've read, but I claim no firm knowledge here Thanks, Brad |

I don't know about the repop, but the factory marks were TDC and 6BTDC

The balancer for a 65/earlier is smaller in diameter then the later balancer.
SO... You can fit an early balancer on an engine with a later timing cover (11 bolt) but you cannot fit a later balancer on an earlier timing cover (8 bolt). The pulleys for the early balancer are drilled different so I'm not sure they will fit the later balancer. I've seen pulleys that have both sets of drilled holes. I'm not sure if the early pulleys mounted on a later balancer will have the correct alignment for the alt, steering, and air condition pulleys/brackets. . Buy a timing light with the dial back feature and you can read your timing on the light. I never saw a stock Pontiac damper that was degreed.
