Default T5 swap / insallation instructions

Any out there have a step by step set of instructions to put a T5 in a 69 GTO? I'm particularly interested in information on change of angle, etc.

Thanks,

Marc

Why the T5? A 5.0 liter Ford Mustang could shatter one. Imagine what the torque from a 400 would do to it. You'd be better off with a Tremec.

1. Attach transmission to bellhousing with wing-nuts.

2. When transmission explodes, wing-nuts allow quick disassembly.

3. Wash, rinse, repeat.

My T10 is worn out. It has to be replaced. I can pick up a used WC T5 for $500. A Tremec is $2,500, minimum.

How much to rebuild what you have?

Haven't really considered rebuilding the 4 speed. If I have to replace it (which I do) and sink some $$ into the transmission, I wanted to get an overdrive. I'm making it a daily driver and looking for gas $$ savings.

This is not really a gear slamming hot rod that I am working with, even though the engine (a 455, not the original 400) has some go-fast parts put into it.

Honestly from what I've read (and others seem to agree.....) you'll be tossing that $500 out.
Maybe rebuild the current trans and look for an inexpensive highway friendly rear end?

I agree with the above that it's going to be time and money thrown out into the wind, but hey it's your time and money.

Since there are a dozen combinations of T-5's, where is the shifter location? What output shaft does it have? etc. etc. Basically the simple variations in T-5's that were built ensure there is no step by step how to. Sure it has the proper GM input shaft?

That being said, bolt trans to existing bellhousing. Cut new or widen existing shifter hole for where ever the shifter lands (depends on which case variant of T-5 you have, but can almost guarentee it won't be where the stock shifter is as they are built inboard). Modify or fab up the crossmember support. Again, depends on which tailshaft assembly it has. Then shorten the driveshaft the appropriate amount, again depends on which tailshaft assembly the T-5 has.

I've heard this before. Probably should do some listening and thinking. Thanks everyone.

The T5 is rated for 350 ft/lbs of torque. Your 455 has MORE torque than that. Don't waste $500. As David suggests, inquire into the cost of having your current transmission overhauled.

I quality rebuild kit for your t10 would be right around $200 from daves4speeds. Then a quality gear set $150-200? (Not positive since I've never purchased one.) still less than a T5 and you have better cruising rpm. Or just rebuild the t10 and save up for a good overdrive trans.
